For those who care..(Orio for instance) LOL This is not a scientific test just a comparison of the 2 lenses and my impressions of them..This will stretch out over time as I use them and so far no choice has been made by me as to which I prefer. Nuff sed...Some photos and crops to look at.
First a few from the 300mm Red MC. The originals and then the crops..somewhere around a 100% crop.
Now the 300mm "Olympic"
And a few long shots with the 300 Red MC. Infinity focus.
From these it looks like the Red MC is sharper....I'm not totally sold on that...Need to shoot some more before I pass judgement on that.
I have noticed the Olympic has more CA but that should be as the coatings on it are different from the other one _________________ Big Dawg

If you get a good one you won't be disappointed. The P6 is big but the M42 Olympic is nearly as big and nearly the same weight!! HEAVY!! _________________ Big Dawg |

Not to blow my own horn, but be careful and let the seller grant you a right of return. I bought a Tele-Tessar 300 Contax which was new old stock.
It was so ridden with purple fringing to be useless. Luckily, I could return it and buy a perfect Vario-Sonnar 100-300 instead. Also new old stock.
Which is to say that new old stock can be a great thing. But it's no guarantee that the lens doesn't suck.
For instance, I am sure that the lens I returned was re-sold again as new old stock... intelligenti pauca (a word to the wise is sufficient) _________________ Orio, Administrator

Absolutely Orio, I remember your experience with that lens. I never found out if that was the standard level of performance to be expected from that model, but the 100-300 VS stepped in nicely instead anyway!
Has anyone tried the MC version with a 1.4x TC at all? I'm wondering what it would be like wide open with a Kenko DGX Pro 300 on the end... _________________ Graham - Moderator

Any idea why that shot has loads of CA and the others from that lens haven't? _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

The background behind the birds in the 300mm Red MC photos is black...The background of the gray tree trunk in the Olympic photos is much lighter giving a higher contrast thus the edges show the CA. This may happen with the Red MC lens if the background were the same. This is why I have not made any decisions yet and must do many more comparison shots before deciding on one or the other. _________________ Big Dawg |

Here are some infinity shots with the 300mm Olympic. I remembered with these to shoot with a +1 EC so they are better exposed.

No No my friend...It is a "Squirrel Proof Feeder". That means it is made to feed the birds but keep the Squirrels out of the feeder. It works very well. _________________ Big Dawg |

I had to order a 77mm-86mm step up ring and a 86-95mm stepup ring and a CZJ lens shade for a Sonnar 300mm or 180mm lens so the 300mm f/4 Olympic Sonnar could have a lens shade of it's own and make the comparison more equal.
