I was able to run a roll through a friend's Welta Weltax (what an unusual name for a camera!). This is a fine camera, it felt really solid in my hands. It is a tiny camera.
However, the BIG surprise was the capability of the lens. Guess I should have expected the nice quality, seeing as it is a Zeiss Tessar.
The camera has a "shield" that allows for either 6x6 or 4.5x6 images. I took half with the 6x6 format, and the other half with the 4.5x6 as in this image.
Looking through the viewfinder was a great experience...bright and beautiful! There is no rangefinder or meter, but that's no big deal, at least for what I was shooting. The 75mm lens gives a very slight wide angle look to the images.
Last Tuesday was a fine day and I was able to skip on down to the beach, as well as a short foray into the Hoh Valley in Olympic National Park with the camera.
I have been finding that I enjoy photography more if I just take one camera to use for a particular day, although I did have the Rollei as a backup.
Interestingly, I also find it better (for me) to just have two...or at the most three...lenses on an interchangeable lens type of camera for a given day of shooting. It sort of "clears things up" for me and I don't feel like I'm having to make a bunch of decisions rather than just enjoying the shooting. Do any of you shoot this way sometimes too?
Here is a shot, not necessarily the greatest image in the world, but it does show the fine output of this extremely sharp old lens. I stuck a polarizer in front of the lens to try to cut down a lot of glare. There is a bit of possible contrast loss due to glare down in the lower left area of the full image, but overall - this is a hell of a lens, especially for its time.
I'll scan up some more samples from the day. This camera is a temptation (there are too many temptations of course ).
Crop from original scan - no sharpening or other alterations
Full image for Web - I tried Unsharp Mask, but it didn't do justice. So I just left the image alone. This is straight out of the scanner with no auto-sharpening selected (with auto sharpening by the scanner it would lhave looked better, but I wanted to give as original as possible); sometimes it's just good to not do anything to an image. The rocky area at the bottom, with the pool of water barely visible - pretty sharp! Edge sharpness is not that bad either, and I think the trees look just great.

I would say that is pretty awesome performance with no sharpening!
Problem is, this needs to be in the gallery, as all your pictures do!

Yes, Bill, I'm sort of amazed at that little lens! It doesn't look like much on the camera, and had a lot of scratches and marks on the very old glass. I guess I wasn't expecting a particularly sharp image, but in my own opinion, it fooled me big time.
The camera seems to be REALLY well put together (those Germans!), and the thing snaps open with a solid ker-chunk. Then, when you snap the shutter, it's almost silent!
This is really just a test shot, Bill. But hey...thanks for the kudo! Lately I don't think I could ever come up to your standards these days. Your images just blow me away. _________________

An outstanding lens for sharpness. Too sharp for me. Here's an example when I put the lens on my e330.
that was a crop from this.

Sold it I'm afraid -
I was looking for a replacement for an ensar on my commando and settled on a ross Xpres - funnily enough - it was a little better than the Solinar I also tried - same sharpnes but better bokeh. The downside of the excellent sharpness of the tessar was some very angry bokeh in some conditions. |

Xpres, those are wonderful! Was that a Tessar 75/3.5 from a Weltax and remounted, or was it the Tessar lens standalone? Not sure what you meant. But at any rate, beautiful!
I will be scanning a couple more from this "surprise" camera this evening, hopefully one to show the bokeh...I don't remember what the bokeh looked like but I'll soon find out! _________________

Yes, it was remounted with an extension tube and some blu tak. It was a quicker way to check out the charecteristics of several folder lenses.
Look forwrd to seeing some more pics. the weltax is fairly well known for the quality of it's tessar lens, the others it was fitted with weren't so good. |
