I own several adaptall lenses: SP 35-80, SP 60-300 and 35-135 (last version). All of these give me excellent results. I wanted a little wider zoom, so I bought the SP 28-80 3.5-4.2 and have found it a little disappointing. It is quite a decent lens, but it lacks the sharpness of the other lenses, specially in the wider range. Have you a similar experience, or do I have a bad copy?. Thank you.

Javier

I usually stop mine down to f5.6 where it becomes pin Sharp. But it's crap wide open LOL

I have two copies, both disappointing wide open, worse than many lower tier lenses but stopped down it becomes one of the sharpest zooms I own. One of mine has a pretty nasty scratch on the front element but it's still tack sharp at f/5.6-f/11

I like that lens mainly for its lack of geometric distortion in whole zoom range. In terms of sharpness there is lose it way to short end. But at wide end looks sharp even wide open. Didn't try it on FF yet so hope it become more than only decent performer though.

Slightly OT but a Vivitar 28-90 may be a better option if you are after this FL.

Thanks for your replies. I have checked the lens as I always do with my "new" lenses: at 28, 50 and 80 mm and from wide open to f16 in a tripod.

Mine it is not that bad wide open, but It is not pin-sharp closed down. At f8 28 mm it is clearly softer that a cheap sigma 28 2.8. At 50 mm gets better and I would rate it as very good at 80 mm. I will keep the lens, but will try to get another copy just in case. I have also noticed the remarkable lack of distortion compared with the SP 35-80.

I have to say that I have also tried an adaptall 28-200 aspherical and it is one of the worse lenses I have ever used (the winner is a sigma 28-200, and the second position an exakta varioplan 70-210). I returned it but kept the mount (a pk/a). I thought that all adaptall-2 lenses were at least pretty decent, but this one it is not!!.

Oh, they did make a few turkeys, and the 28-200 asph is one of them.

This is the picture I took with Tamron SP AD2 28-80 mm with SP 2X TC.

Camera is Fuji S3 Pro, I do not remember the aperture. It was taken last 2 years back.
