I'm waiting for a Pancolar 2/50, bought without having found much information on this variety of Pancolars. Many pages and threads on 1.8, but not many on 2.
If someone owns both, how do they compare? (apart the numbers)?
Thanks. _________________

I have bought a book about the history of Carl Zeiss Jena lenses.
(in German... eek! need to take out my Uni German grammar books)
So in a week or so I'll be able to give you some trustable info
The rumours who goes around the net is that the Pancolar 2.0 would be the Jena copy of the Oberkochen Planar 2.0. Having come to know the two lenses, however, I doubt it: the rendering appears to be quite different. _________________ Orio, Administrator

enzodm: there are 4 optical designs used for 50mm pancolars:
- pancolar 50/2.0 (6 elements in 4 groups)
- pancolar 50/1.8 (6 elements in 4 groups, thoriated)
- pancolar 50/1.8 (6 elements in 4 groups, non-thoriated)
- pancolar 50/1.8 (6 elements in 5 groups, MC)
Pancolar 50/2.0 is a sharp lens, which has lower contrast than multi-coated pancolar 50/1.8, but much better bokeh. Not only the aperture blades are a bit more curved, but the optical design blurs OOF areas in a better way, so there are almost no hexagons in bokeh like with MC 50/1.8
here is a bokeh example of 50/2.0 atf f/4:
no hexagons, no disturbing double-lining artifacts, pleasant IF-OOF transition...
the only problem with this lens is, that it's not easy to find one in a good condition and CLA doubles its price _________________ (almost) complete list of Helios lenses |
