Wow  Thanks for all the comments I had a lot of fun photographing these beautiful birds, they really are very cool 
I found the Tamron SP 300/5.6 was quite a bit sharper wide open, with more manageable CA. That said, the Tamron SP 60-300 appears to be sharper and with less CA than the 300/5.6 at f8. Unfortunately in the cloudy light I had, I needed to shoot wide open.
A banger race is a car race for knackered old vehicles, where there doesn't appear to be any rules other than knock each other off the track until the cars stop working
