I got this Russian camera at a local garage sale. The lady insisted for $10, as I was thinking about $5. Curiosity got me and I paid the $10. However, this seems to be a "strange" camera and I am not used to the operation. I downloaded the manual (which is rather vague) and read the warning about changing the speed after advancing the shutter.
This was the russian model (Logo written in Russian), as well as writing on the lens. The lens appears to be a Jupiter 8 (f/5cm and 1:2). I am surprised that this is actually an interchangeable lens range finder camera! Now with the new interchangeable 4/3 like Lumix, Olympus and Samsung, history appears to repeat itself.
My questions are:
1. When you finish with the film, how to rewind the film back to the cartridge?
2. There is a lever on the left of the camera (next to the spool button). If you press it, the viewer appears to zoom in and out (although it makes viewing slightly out of focus) What is this lever for?
3. I am not that familiar with the outer ring of the shutter release (symbol in russian). Is it for locking the shutter, or actually for releasing the film so that it can be returned back to the original spool cartridge? It looks like the later to me?
Thanks for info.

1. Turn the knurled ring round the shutter release button clockwise. It will sink down a little way into the camera body. Now the film is released. (BTW, it does not return automatically like on more modern cameras. After loading the film you have to turn the ring back before winding the film.)

2. Pull up the knob on the rewind side so you can grip it and turn clockwise.

This is the diopter adjustment for, well, focussing the viewfinder.

This is the like the rewind button on more modern cameras. (See above)

Have a look at http://www.russianplaza.com/ZORKI4MANUAL.htm or http://www.cameramanuals.org/russian_pdf/zorki.pdf for a manual.
Remind: first transport/cocking the shutter, after that set shutterspeed!

Good advice, worth heeding.
I put a strip of tape marked with a felt-tip along the back of the camera with capital letters: WIND ON FIRST

Yes, sorry. A stupid try to give a fast reaction to help; I found the right link and corrected the post.

Actually, I've had 4 Zorki 4s and on every one the shutter speed dial is locked until you have cocked the shutter. It's physically impossible to adjust the shutter speed without first cocking the shutter.
