This is one of my first '58mm shoot-outs'. I'll not draw a conclusion but leave that up to you Smile

None of the lenses was fitted with a hood, but as we know the Helios-44 has a very deeply sunken front element, so it may have had an edge here. Everything was shot wide open.

The pictures have been manually white balanced on the same spot. Resampled to 900px wide, but not sharpened.

58mm f/2.4 Takumar

58mm f/2 Takumar

58mm f/2 Biotar

58mm f/2 Helios-44 (chrome)

58mm f/1.9 Primoplan (exakta, held to M42 mount)

Rino, the Meyer has a quite soft coating and if I look closely I think some of it has come off.

Sorprise me : The helios chrome M39 !!! All of us know that it's very cheap and the oldest helios 44. Better image than the meyer one.

Rino.

Isn't possible, that some light leaked around the exakta mount? I have meyer lenses with scratched coating, I have one uncoated Primoplan, but their contrast is higher.

Anyway, this is very nice comparision, I really like the bokeh of the old Takumars Smile

Yes, it could be possible some light leaked around the mount. My bad, I will look for a proper M42 version.

Since the Helios-44 indeed has the best contrast of all these, its hard to tell if we are seeing what the lenses can do, or merely how bad they can get when (inadvisedly) shot wide open without a hood.

Indeed, I will use hoods next time...

The Tak & the Helios win for me. I cannot pick the best of the two.

+1 for the lens hood suggestion.

Although Chris has a very good point, I still relish the opportunity to compare such similar seeming lenses. Thanks

This is something that I want to know of a lens. Wink

I like looking at these various permutations of lenses. In this case, I am glad to see that there was no measure taken for shading the lenses, so it's rather fun to see the various degrees of contrast and flare that can happen. And then, an additional comparison with the lenses shaded would be very good to see. It's all fun to see!

This is a great test. Since most lenses are very sought after.
58mm f/2.4 Takumar is a heliar design, Isn't it supposed to have a smoother bokeh ? Or is the difference between 2.0 & 2.4 also a factor here ?

A test at all apertures would be great to see the comparison..

Thanks a lot for this.

How about to take some not against the light?

The Helios clearly the best in that condition.
