Hey guys, I need some help scanning my 120 negatives with my Canon 8800F. I was trying to figure a way to scan without the included film trays, since those are technically above the point of focus and don't keep the film flat. But I tried just taking the film out of the tray and placing it the same way directly onto the scanner's glass (emulsion side-down), and the colors came out completely screwed up. I have no idea why. I had a CD case over the film to keep it flat.

What's going wrong? What would be the easiest/cheapest way to do this? Thanks!

By the way, I'm using VueScan. It's sort of confusing :$

The plastic of the CD case is probably screwing with the colours. I've also used them, but only on B&W negs. You could try just holding down the edges or two ends of the film.

Yes!

Doug Fisher's adjustable negative holder with Anti-Newton Ring accessory glass.

There is one for your scanner. I've been using one on my Epson 4870 for a couple of years and it's excellent!

Jules

PS I use Viewscan also and it's very confusing, but it does scan beautifully when you get it tweaked in.

Thank you for the response! I don't think Doug Fisher has one for my scanner yet. I'll definitely buy from him if he makes one, though!

About Doug . .

Do contact him as he is a very nice fellow and may make a prototype up for your model scanner or may have one now available.

Cheers

Thanks sir. I read somewhere that the 8800F is actually sharpest if you place the film directly on the glass. Is this safe at any time, or will it result in Newton rings? Which side should be facing down if I do this?

I don't know on this particular model but in non focusing flatbeds the great focus "sweet spot" may vary from scanner to scanner.

Put the shiniest side toward the lens and I suggest to use a mask made out of heavy dark paper to hold the sides of the film flat.

You may or may not get Newton rings . . have to try to see.

Consider wet mounting also.

Thanks for all your help! So I'm putting the shiny side face-down? Is there any way to remove Newton Rings if they do occur, other than in post-processing? Thanks again!
