I didn´t found this scanner on the German software and driver support side. Product is unknown.

Anyway could only be software problem.

It doesn't recognize the frames. Evil or Very Mad
I tried to scan without the holder, making it think it's a whole document, but this way the film does not hold flat and creates out of focus areas on the images Mad

Yes, you are right. I have here a 3590 and the film holder has no 6x4,5 frame Shocked

Perhaps you have to buy some slider frames in 6 x 4,5 space ?

Have you already tried Vuescan? It does not implement the original software holder detection (unless that is done hardware side) and often lets you scan odd formats. The trial version is free, too.

Perhaps you can fix your negs inside the 6x6 frame somehow...

Vuescan would not make it different than what I am doing now without holder.

As for fitting somehow inside the holder, I tried, but the software does not recognize the frames, like i said, so, it's impossible to scan using the holder...

Now, after having let me to scan two stripes as "whole document", it does not even work that way anymore: all that the scanner shows me is a black with some garbage coloured lines in Sad

try epson v500 software, perhaps works

Will it work on a different scanner?

Does it scan "whole document" with backlight?

I don't know what happened, one minute it worked, the minute after it started to scan mess.

I'm not familiar with the 3550, but I own a 3170 and a 4990. Both use Epson Scan software, which is almost identical between the two scanners. One thing I DO NOT do is use it in any mode other than Professional. In Pro mode, I must manually indicate the area being scanned. There is NO auto frame detection. If the version of the Epson software you use has a Professional setting, give it a try. It should work fine for you.

Shortly after I first bought my 3170, I tried scanning some 6x6 mf slides with it -- using one of the other modes which I forget the name of now. About half the time, it wouldn't detect the frame edges right, and messed the scans up badly. The solution was switching to Pro mode. Haven't looked back since.

Here it is, how you can set your scanner.

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=FAQ&oid=70504&prodoid=63056498&foid=71785

Selected FAQ

Q: How do I set up Epson Scan so that it properly “Thumbnails” my 120/220 film images?

A:You must select the film size before scanning.

To view the thumbnail previews of images from 120/220 medium format film, click the Configuration button, click the Film Size tab, and then select the correct size as the Medium Format Film Size setting.

The thumbnail preview feature for 120/220 film supports the following 5 common medium format film sizes (all values are in centimeters): 6x4.5 (default), 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, and 6x9. Note that 120/220 medium format film is not supported in the Full Automatic Mode.

Thanks Attila, yes I found about the configurations thanks Bill, but it does not work without the proper holder.
Luckily I have now found the holder - bad thing is the holder cuts a lot off the sides, it makes it look like a 545 not a 645 Mad

Strange, I not see much cropping I believe we have same holder.

I rarely if ever use the auto frame / thumbnail - I select my frames myself. The 120 holder works fine for 645, and you get the full image area.

That's the full P645 frame, from the very first roll I shot. Epson 4490 and Epson software.

I also select frame myself but still the cropping exist.
Oh well you can't do anything about it I think.
Here's a picture scanned with proper holder:

Some people file away at the edges of the holder. I think probably it is possible to make a holder yourself, screw the guide holes etc, just putting the film on the glass by itself works.

Attila, yes, but we should keep on point, we were talking about Orio's
travail with his scanner. Laughing (It is a cute kitten, is why Jussi posted it.)

Have a story about using the 35mm slide holder the first time. I thought
the holder would hold the slide, so I placed one in a hole and it went
right through to the floor! Laughing Yeah, just used as a guide on the scanner
glass. The cardboard backing of the slide rests on the glass and is 1mm thick.

I, too, don't use the thumbnails, custom cookie cut each frame. I try to
see margin all around the picture which means you have to be careful
centering the strip in the holder.
