I'd like to buy hoods to all my MF lenses.

I'm thinking in rubber ones. They are cheap.

Do you think they would work fine?

I have one doubt here. The diameter of filter its the in the rubber hoods?

My Planar 50mm 1.7 has:

- Filter Size 55mm

55mm rubber hood is the right one?

I'll put one in the package for you with 55 mm ring.
Rubber ones work fine
Metal are best for protection

Hahaha I sent you an email 10s ago.

I have some lenses but I'd like to have hood to my Planar 50mm , Tak 55mm and Biotar 58mm.

I don't know wich one would fit at each lens.

You'll find two for the planar an yak in the package
I don't know the size for the Helios
It has such a deep set front element should be ok to use a smallish hood
Or none at all I've little experience with helios 44

I'm selling my Helios.

I'll need to my Biotar.

I'll be very appreciated! Smile

Confirm me that situation about filter and rubber hood size. Is it the same?

ex.
55mm filter size = 55m ruber hood size?

That's correct.
I've been using a mixture of metal and rubber hoods for years. It doesn't matter which, a rubber hood is better than none, and I find the rubber ones to be perfectly fine.

Thanks Farside.

Andy will get 2 for me.

I got a metal one to my 135mm today too.

Everything protected from light we don't want. Wink

I don't like wearing rubber hoods. On warm days they get hot and sticky,
plus the police look at you funny. Laughing Better off to leave it with the rest of
the wetsuit. Wink

cheap rubber hoods from ebay break very easy, Contax one are better quality (and expensive)
I never put any hood on my lens as I never see contrast fallout or flare on T*
for shock protection when I am in a crowd, I hide the lens in my hand

I only expect to use them if necessary. Sometimes I'll need it to protect. Smile

Rubber hoods are fine but be careful to use the correct type with wide angle lenses. Even though you might not see the hood in the viewfinder, it can still cause vignetting. I ruined all the pictures on a 36 roll of film using a rubber hood on a 35mm lens before I found out.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm using digital so I could see right away if it is working.

I'll test them and if they don't help me in anything I don't use them anymore.

For wide angle lenses that are giving you vignetting, probably remote on a
crop camera like the 400D, you can use a razor blade and trim off some of
the rubber hood.

Contax brand rubber hoods are two kinds, one is 55mm for 50mm lenses and the other for CZ 28/2.8. The former one is usable for 35mm lens too, it does not vignettes even this case. The rubber one is a pretty good protection for the lens, its rim is very hard.

And where can I buy them?

PostPosted: Tue Sep 02, 2008 8:46 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Oh, it is no longer made. You have to search for at ebay, it comes up
occasionally. If you really really need it, I can get it in Tokyo in October,
but used one thou (maybe brand new one is still available).

I like more the metal hood. It's very good protection, somebody cries after the scratches in the front element. It's better to avoid surprised damages and in this way, it's better the hood and not the piece of glass (filter) that not was designed for the shame of your lens.

And, marginally, there are hoods beatufully made, like the leicas or contax.

AH if you put a hood for 50mm over a 35 mm and not vigneting, it's no good for 50 mm.

Good luck.

Rino.

Do you have an idea of their prices?

I only want hood to my planar 50mm 1.7 and my biotar 58mm f/2 for now..

PostPosted: Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:33 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

It is hard to answer, but it will be $15 to $30 for a used rubber hood.
As you know it is no longer made, so it gets scarcer and scarcer.

Ok Koji. If you could get it bring it to my Planar 50/1.7 only.

Don't worry Lazzaros.

I still remember it, to bring back a Contax rubber hood
for 55mm filter diameter lens. Even if I forget it, I have at least
five of them so I can spare one for you.

If you really need it NOW, I can send one of mine to your place
in Lisboa. I went there last year as a tourist, I love it. Too bad
I did not know you last year, oh well that is a life.

Many thanks Koji.

If you sell one to my Planar how much it would be?

You could come back and then I'll show some nice places to shoot!

You and everyone who want to come to Lisbon.

Does anybody know the size in millimeters for filters or hoods for the following lenses:
Jupiter 21M
Jupiter 37A
Helios-44-2
It seems like all these Russian lenses need different sizes filters.
Thanks!
