I came across mention of this on a flickr thread, where the author says he was able to scan the neg before it fell apart. It's hard to make out from the small pic, but you can see emulsion cracking in a crazy-paving pattern.

I hope this is a one-off, as I haven't come across any mention of this elsewhere and it's possible it was just a fault of his lab.

Interesting, Dave, makes you wonder how the neg was stored or if they used wolverine piss for the stop bath. Wink Yeah, I agree, an isolated
occurence.
