Yeah, I'll only sell mine when I get a black version.

By black version is it the one that has black body and silver nose?
I have always wondered what's the difference between this version and the white/silverish one with black focus ring version.
Is the black version the older one and silver newer Cosina made one?

Thanks

As far as I know, the silver and the black RE's are the same optically.

Here are some old WO test shots:
I was too cold to take my time on this one, I was shivering while shooting this hand held.

100% crop:

A warmer day, still hand held:

Two WO shots showing sharpness and blur:

Sorry if it's too big.

I own both the 1.8 and the 1.4. I consider the 1.8 to be sharper at f/1.8. By f/2.8 the bigger 1.4 takes the advantage and will keep it.

Here is a quick comparaison between the two, in bad lighting condition, I will do a few more shots (landscape and objects) tomorrow if someone is interested ! Clearly, the 1.8 is a very good lens for the price.

First is a close-up on a Jupiter lens. The 58mm f/1.8 is on the left, the 58mm 1.4 set at f/1.8 on the right.

Second is a close up on a print

Sure I'm interested, I'm trying to find out if my RE 58/1.4 is a bad copy or just normal so a 1.8 vs 1.4 shootout will be very helpful, so the more shots the better. TIA.

Here it is ! Quick comparaison shots between the 58/1.8 and the 58/1.4. I don't have yet a calibration target so I just tried on a few objects and the results are always the same: the 1.8 is sharper and gives more contrast from f/1.8 to f/2.8, and then after f/2.8 its bigger brother takes the advantage in terms of sharpness.

First picture is always the 58/1.8, second is the 58/1.4.

Focused on the metal handle of the lamp.

At f/2.8.

For comparaison, the 58/1.4 wide open at f/1.4:

Another shot, 100% close up, at f/1.8:

Close-up on a lens. I focused on the number 4. First shots at f/1.8.

at f/5.6, the 58/1.4 gives more sharpness.

And then the 58/1.4 wide open:

Thanks, that should help me sort my 1.4 out. Smile

Decided to dust off this topic as I just won the 58/1.8 at a pretty good price, hope it works:

Click here to see on Ebay

The word is out on these Topcors, always a bidding frenzy for the f1.4.

A friendly member of this forum gave me some information from this book:
Marco Antonetto, Claudio Russo (1997). Topcon Story. Nassa Watch Gallery Collector camera publishing. ISBN 88-87161-00-3.

Been looking all over for it .... i want it !

This is the info he gave me:
There's four generations of 58/1.8. First is 62xxxx. Second is 99xxxx, optically different (same number of elements, one more group). Third is 1160xxxx, no optical change. Fourth is 1161xxxx and up, another optical change. (Per Atonetto's book.)

Mine is a #1168xxxx

Mine is 1168xxxx, too. Glass is perfect, focusing is smooth, and aperture ring works with the blades.

Lens is much smaller than the aluminum finish 58/1.4.

Thanks Mir.

Looks better than not bad to me, there's a great sense of depth on the hanging flower baskets shot.

Klaus, thanks, spare, but accurate. Wink I didn't take a lot of time to ensure good focus on
some of these.

Ian, Topcors are my faves, love how they render, thanks!

If Attila's repairman is able to fix the 58/1.4, will make 5. Smile

Sorry you have to eat scraps of food to be able to afford all the lenses we keep tempting you with, the bright side is once you have a good set of lenses, the temptation to buy more does go down, unless you're addicted, in which case, welcome to the club. Twisted Evil
