Let's say your best friend wants to make a jump into manual lenses. He asks you: "Jimmy?! You've been doing this for 40 years. I just won me $10,000 and would like to buy me 25 MF lenses that just rock the house! What do you recommend?"

I know many have strong opinions on what works for *them*. It is ok Smile This is a for fun type list that hopefully will also be informative to new comers. Let's compile this list for Jimmy's friend. It can be any brand (russian, tamron, nikon, leica, or something super obscure etc.) as long as it can be adapted to one of the top 35mm cameras such as nikon/canon.

I'll throw my vote for Nikon: 105mm F2.5 AI

I think I'd say no one really needs 25 lenses. Wink

Well, but that's the question - which camera? For Nikon I'd just buy a set of Ai Nikkors, say 24/2.8, 35/2, 50/1.4, 105/2.5, 180/2.8, 35-105, 80-200 and a macro. For Canon I'd probably go with a similar set of Zuikos.

Best lenses and only USD 10.000? Without this limit I would start:

Zeiss ZE 15mm/2.8
Zeiss ZE 21mm/2,8
Zeiss ZE 35/1.4 or Contax MM 35mm/1.4 - or for special bokeh form even Zeiss Rollei 35mm/1.4
Zeiss Otus 55mm/1.4
Minolta Rokkor 58mm/1.2
Coastal Optics 60mm/4.0 Apo UV-VIS-IR
Canon FD 85mm/1.2 L
Meyer Goerlitz Trioplan 100/2.8
(Nikon 105/2.0 DC Nikkor - manual for Canon EOS)
Voigtländer 125/2.5 Apo
(Sony STF 135mm/2.8 STF, manual for Canon EOS)
Zeiss ZE 135/2.0 Apo
Leica APO R 180mm/2.0
Nikon AI-S 300mm/2.0
Leica Apo Telyt R 400/2.8 Modular
Leica Apo Telyt R 800/5.6 Modular
...
With this limit I would take Canon FD tele lenses, like a 300 or 400/2.8. No Coastal Optics, no Otus, no Sony, Voigtländer, and much less Zeiss.

No matter if anyone needs 25 lenses or not - I love those games! Very Happy

First, I would recommend to cover each important focal length with the best lens possible and then see, if some money remains. Wink

You said Nikon or Canon and unfortunately not Sony, because for a Nikon D800 that list looks very different from a list for a Canon EOS 5D MkIII or even a Sony A7.

Canon EOS 6D:

Ultra-Wide: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/15 ZE
21mm: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21 ZE
24mm: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.0/25 ZE
28mm: Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/28
35mm: Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35 (C/Y)
50mm: Zeiss Otus 1.4/55 ZE
85/90/100mm: Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/85 ZE
135mm: Zeiss Apo-Sonnar 2.0/135 ZE or Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/135 (latest version)
180/200mm: Leica Apo-Summicron 2.0/180
300mm: EF 2.8/300 L IS (AF)
Low Light: Leica Summilux-R 1.4/50 or Pentax-K 1.2/50

Nikon D700: (For manual lenses I still prefer the D700 over the D800.)

Ultra-Wide: Nikkor 14-24 (Sorry, AF)
21mm: s.a.
24mm: s.a.
28mm: Nikkor AF-D 1.4/28 (Sorry, AF) or AI 2/28
35mm: Nikkor AI 1.4/35
50mm: Nikkor AI-S 1.8/50
85/90/100mm: Nikkor AI-S 1.4/85 or AF 2/105 DC (AF, again)
135mm: Zeiss Apo-Sonnar 2.0/135 ZF.2
180/200mm: Nikkor AF-S 2/200 VR (and again AF)
300mm: Nikkor AI-S 2.0/300 (!)
Low Light: Noct-Nikkor 1.2/58

Sony A7: (not the A7R)

Ultra-Wide: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/15 ZF.2
21mm: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21 ZF.2
24mm: Zeiss Distagon T* 2.0/25 ZF.2
28mm: Leica Summicron-M 2.0/28
35mm: Leica Summilux-M 1.4/35
50mm: Zeiss Otus 1.4/55 ZF.2 or Sony (Zeiss) 1.8/55
85/90/100mm: Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/85 ZF.2
135mm: Zeiss Apo-Sonnar 2.0/135 ZF.2 or Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/135 (latest version)
180/200mm: Leica Apo-Summicron 2.0/180
300mm: Leica Apo-Telyt-R 4/280
Low Light: Leica Noctilux-M 0.95/50

But unfortunately for none of those lists 10000US$ would be enough. Wink

Impossible task, far too subjective.

Wow, no Contax G 45mm? (I've never used one but was wondering if I should get it).

$US 10 k won't buy that much. Price the latest most best from Schneider and Rodenstock.

I can be very happy with just ten of my lenses. I never paid more than $100, so that's under $1,000. Buy a new Sony A7, then spend the $7,000 left over to go somewhere nice to take pictures.

On an Island I would travel light
I don't have a full frame DSLR so my choice of lenses will be for APS-C.
To go with my Nikon D300 I would take only two lenses - Sigma 10-20 DC HSM and its bigger brother 17-70 DC HSM.
Both are AF or MF lenses and the latter has a useful close-up feature.
Note that I would be concentrating on island landscape and seascape.
Both take great images and would take up little volume in my baggage.
OH

Yeah, I'd need to hit the prostitution circuit Wink

I noticed you gave Zeiss and Leica to both Canon and Sonya, but stayed close to Nikkor for Nikon. I am not sure if that is a vote up or down for the Nikon and its glass.
