Sigma 85/1.4

the lens is based on a very unorthodox optical formula of 11 elements in 8 groups:

it features 9 diaphragm blades, but min. focusing distance is 85 cm - so not a close-up lens...

Quote:
Sigma’s New 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens is a large aperture medium telephoto lens optimized for use with digital SLR cameras and is especially ideal for portrait and low light photography. Designed with SLD glass and a glass mold element excellent color correction is achieved for all types of aberrations and superior optical performance is ensured. It is equipped with a rear focus system that minimized fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing and the Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting even in backlight photography. HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus capability and the round 9 blade diaphragm creates pleasant out-of-focus highlights. It comes with a Petal-type hood to block out extraneous light. For digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor, a dedicated hood adapter, which expands the length of the lens hood is supplied and enables the hood to block out extraneous light more effectively.

Maybe large makers are finally abandoning (well, no, maybe that's too much, let's say 'resizing') the path of producing only slow and aberration-ridden heavy zooms?
One would hope so.
But I don't stretch my hope too high Wink

Perhaps Samyang 85mm is selling better than expected and that awakened Sigma senses?

On the other hand, Sigma discontinued the reputable 180/3.5 APO 1:1 Macro without any replacement...

Closer to the Z Planar than to the Samyang...
Both for people who want autofocus it will be a good opportunity.
It remains to be seen how many of the people who want autofocus will also prefer a prime over a zoom.
I don't know why but I am of the impression that many of the people who want autofocus are also people who prefer zooms (maybe with IS) over primes.

Elder photogs, who do not wish to hold heavier AF zoom but want to make
good photos of grandchildren or fast moving objects, wish to use AF primes
since their eyesights aren't used to be. Very Happy

I am one of them, AF lens would make sense.

Well, now that I'm into primes, I don't take zoom anymore (or when I take it, I don't use it). 135mm is quite OK, especially on APS-C. I can see cases where I could use more, but I'm not that interested in these and the occasions would be very rare anyway, so my cheap 75-300 zoom is quite sufficient for that. I do like shooting with primes, the constraints it implies, etc.

Having said that, I like AF Smile OK, I mainly own and use MF lenses, and I like them a lot. But to be fair, if I could have such a quality with AF for a decent price, I'd choose the one with AF Wink It's a balance to find, but I don't see primes as being incompatible with AF - but being fast lenses, they require good AF!

And I must admit my wife is happy with primes (OK, kinda surprised at the beginning but now OK), but not that much with MF... That makes borrowing the camera a bit unpleasant to her, and that's not cool Confused
