I found a Russian copy of a Leica screw-mount camera in a local camera shop today. It has a collapsible lens -- looks like a copy of the 3.5 Elmar. I couldn't read what brand it was cuz everything is in Cyrillic. Cosmetically, it's in good shape. I can probably pick it up for a good price, but before I pays my money, I'm wondering if I should even bother.
I've owned a few Canon SM rangefinders, and they were reliable and fun to use. I've always been a little leary of the Russian ones though. Is this justified, or are they typically decent picture takers? _________________ Michael

You probably found a Fed or Zorki? I think these are decent picture takers, the shutters are fairly reliable (I've yet to see a bad one), mainly because the shutter is so simple mechanically (there are no slow speeds). They're not worth a lot though. _________________ Peter - Moderator

Well the price tag, which is old and yellowed, says $150 and MAKE OFFER. I'm thinking I can probably pick it up for $100. Seems it would be worth it. _________________ Michael

You can buy the same set paying about $50-$60 including shipping. As far I know from different sources those cameras are quite good. Recently I am waiting for Fed 2B to try my L39 lenses. Paid $25 for the body. _________________ Cheers, Voytek |

Thanks for the info, guys. The seller is a local camera shop, one of the few places left locally that has any used equipment at all. The salesman, who owns a Leica M4, knew nothing about it.
I guess I should have checked on eBay first. It looks like this Fed-1:

I have two Zorki-4's and they are quite nice, but the shutter speeds in the other are very much out of sync despite good external condition of the camera. The viewfinder in particular seems bigger than on many rangefinders… |
