In yesterday's thread about my search for the "perfect" 50mm I mentioned my latest buy, the Rikenon XR 50/2 S in PK mount. There are a few threads on the Pentax forum praising its sharpness, and since this lens is commonly available and costs very little (I think I paid mine 10€), I got curious and decided to give it a try.

After a couple of days, I can say that it certainly lives up to its fame: it's one of the sharpest 50/55mm lenses I tried, and while its colors are not spectacular, and its bokeh less smooth than other lenses of the same focal length, it's definitely one of the best bargains you can get if you own a Pentax camera.

This is the lens mounted on my *istD

It's a smallish lens, mainly built of plastic so very light, but it feels sturdy with no wobbles and a precise feel. The focus action has little damping and requires very little force, but it's smooth and in use it feels good.

Here are a few pics of my favourite subject (it beats shooting flowers, and since she is constantly in motion it's a good exercise of my mf skills), all taken wide open at f2. The first two pics are in-camera jpg from the *istD, which is famous for having a very soft conversion. I only fixed the colors to remove unwanted casts and minimally boosted contrast with curves, then resized and applied a tiny bit of usm. The greenish cast in the first two pictures is due to the green walls of the place we were in.

a 100% crop from the last image with no usm, the real point of focus was on the hand at bottom right.

I am now waiting for this lens' big brother, the Rikenon XR 50mm f1.7, which has multicoated elements and should have the same sharpness with better contrast and colors, and like this lens can be found for 10€ on ebay.

Be careful of the lens model: the Ricoh 'P' lenses have an extra pin that jams on Pentax DSLRs.

Then you won't be able to mount the Rikenons as they have a PK mount... Smile

I have the XR Rikenon and the Sears K-mount 50mm f2 and they appear to the same lens, both quite sharp. My versions have a plain K-mount.

Mamiya Sekor 50mm/2 lenses (M42 and other mounts) may be the same formula.
