Well I broke down and bought an M9. I have quite a few lenses which it can shoot, and I want to try them all. Smile

I know there are a number of members here who also have an M9 or M8, I hope you will join and share you favorite lenses in this thread--and any lens on M8 or 9 you find interesting.

It was a very dark afternoon here, but I had a new camera Smile

yes uhoh, I suppose you now have both the M9 and A7, after exchanging it for the A7r..of course I am curious how you feel they compare

PostPosted: Thu Jan 09, 2014 1:49 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

can we assume by this purchase that you were disillussioned with the A7's rf lens performance?

PostPosted: Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:51 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Congratulations. Any M Leica gives you a very special feeling. You love it or you loathe it. I love it. Wink

I love the A7 and will keep it Smile

35 the CV 1.2 is close to M9, and CV 1.4 is very usable. but wider than that it's really no comparison. The M9, despite terrible scores at DXO, just makes great images with the RF glass, and the tiny wides, like CV 21 make it a reasonable size.

Prices have come way down, so I just bit the bullet. Smile

A7+M9 a dream combo for me (and maybe any MF lover), really.

Still serious color shift towards the corners. Have you tried one of the lens profiles (Super-Elmar 18...)?

I think these were shot with that profile.

I was actually surprised there was not more colorshift--but you know it can be subtle and I pick it up the more shots I have.

I should some shots for Adobe flat field plug in.

Lucas, I loved this lens on the 5n, now I really see it. I will need a viewfinder though--keh had a frankenfinder for a decent price, so I pulled the trigger--some tell me I will hate it.

This M9 is like an american girl doll: needs serious accessories LOL Last few days I have bought two straps, A&A red "easy" and Barton 1972, a thumbs up, after I ordered a zhou case, my seller announced he had a luigi for the M9 he would give me for 120 shipped: fell for that. And I found a Leica grip for cheap. Oh yes, a diaopter and soft release thingy.

I feel like the guy in the movie "collector"! My precious. The A7 is cinderella and can wear the extra strap.

Here is the tiny and famous and cheap CV 21/4:

I wonder why it has that nasty colour shift on the left but not on the right? Decentred lens perhaps?

A decentered lens would result in lack of sharpness, not in a colour shift. And that colour shift here is not at all nasty.

Nasty colour shift looks like this:

CV Super-Wide Heliar 4.5/15 on Sony A7R! Shocked

Yeah, Ian get a grip......LOL

Today, I took out another lens which never quite lived up to what I expected. It's a legend really, available often for 250-300USD, supposedly designed after the BIG legend, the Canon LTM 35/2. I'm talking about the TINY 114 gram CV 35/2.5

On the 5n i was never happy with the edges--even with the huge crop of aps-c--and it was unusable on the A7r, but barely OK on the plain A7. How is it on the M9?

Let's start wide open:

L1000431 by unoh7, on Flickr

According to M9 this is f/3.4

L1000405 by unoh7, on Flickr

f/5.6:

L1000420 by unoh7, on Flickr

f/6.8

L1000432 by unoh7, on Flickr

To see originals, full size, click on the photo, then right click it in flickr and choose "original". It's pretty astounding to me. Smile

I am using three lenses most of the time on my M9, they are all Zeiss ZMs:

- C Sonnar 1.5/50
- Biogon 2/35
- Biogon 2.8/25

I have chosen them very accurately, due to their specific qualities:

- the C Sonnar for it's bokeh and portrait ability
- the Biogon 2/35 because it's the commercially available lens with the lowest geometric distortion (near zero)
- the Biogon 2.8/25 because it's one of the commercially available lenses with the highest resolving power

I am delighted with all of them and will never change them. They are also completely free from colour shift.
Other lenses I use:

- Orion-15 6/28 (Soviet wide copy of aerial Zeiss Topogon), beautiful gift from LucisPictor
Excellent image quality, slow speed a bit limiting the use

- Jupiter-9 2/85 L39 threadmount - I am waiting for the mail to deliver it to me.

- Voigtlaender Snapshot-Skopar 4/25
Excellent image quality that does not fall far from the Biogon equivalent, on the M9 it shows some colour shift
unfortunately, it is possible to fix the images but for this reason, I now only use it on film (where it's perfect).

I also occasionally use the Zeiss lenses from the old Contax RF line, but rarely, due to the awkwardness of
the adapter. I prefer to use those lenses on the native cameras with film.

No Leica lenses for me - both because I prefer Zeiss image fingerprint, and because Leica lenses are priced insanely
for my possibilities.

One other lens I wish I could buy for the M9? The 4.5/21 ZM Biogon - it would be perfect for my architectural shots.

Regarding your question about the Distagon: I would not use a retrofocal wide lens on a rangefinder camera - it sort of
denies the best feature of the system. Also I am not impressed by your samples of the Distagon.
If the extra degrees of FOV are not crucial, I would sell it and buy one of the Biogon 21s instead: the f/4.5 if you favour
architectural shots, the f/2.8 if you favour nature scenery or street action.

50 cron @ f/2 no PP:

L1001044 by unoh7, on Flickr

It's a funny camera to use, because you really never know what you have until later--like film. The LCD is terrible of course, and with a fast shot like this focus is always a question--with any camera I guess--but the Sonys you can tell right there if you have "it".

But no camera I've owned takes my breath away like the Leica M9. Very distinctive look. Ultra contrast and very fine detail.
