I don't need "expensive" lens, actualy I don't need nothing....and to be honest, I'm getting tired too only have to talk about prices of my lenses..............and you know what, this lens is not better than a cheap lens, but I'm a french guy and I just bought Angenieux lenses by patriotism for my mother land Wink ......

The lens seems excellent, lots of microcontrast, just as I like it.

I agree with Pich900 about the above quoted thought.
Every thing has a price, it's not that we have to be concerned about the price of only certain lenses.
Some things we can afford, some things we can not. That's life.
What is expensive for Excalibur is cheap for Nikos. What used to be cheap for me two years ago is expensive for me today.
But the lens does not change, it is always the same.
And nothing of all this will ever stop anyone from taking photographs. We know well that there are cheap lenses that perform great,
there are expensive lenses that perform weakly. There is something for everyone.

I can answer straight away: in many situations the differences are minimal.
It's the extreme situations that usually make the better lenses shine in the comparison.
If you are the kind who goes out to photograph only when there is a good sunny day and never try difficult photographic situations,
then you can safely save a lot of money by using affordable decent lenses, with nearly no differences in results from expensive lenses.

Well Orio I know you have some excellent lenses therefore would be qualified to give advice and I agree with you even though I don't own an expensive lens Laughing but I'm sure many people would like to know how good their lenses are without spending lots of money, and coming back to the Angenieux, zoom.....I think my Kiron zoom is very good but I'll never know if it's good or bad until pascal (pich900) borrows it and gives an opinion Wink

If you find your Kiron zoom verry good (and I'm sure it is), why should you look for an other (more expensive) lens?....I use to have a tamron adaptall 80/200 and a vivitar series 1 70/210 f3.5, both were very good Very Happy ! this Angenieux zoom is simply better (and that's what we can expect from a more expensive lens), and when i say better it's not only mean sharper but everything is beter, it's sharp wide open, it has a beautiful color rendering, the bokeh is very pleasing (i think!), it has almost no CA, etc, etc,......but I thought it was a little bit visible with the samples I have posted.....anyway, i don't try to conviced you, and again if you are happy with your lens (like me with mine) then "quoi demande le peuple........"!!!sorry, my english is so poor, i get tired to searching for my words!

Well photography is just a hobby for me and I have curious nature Wink and who wouldn't want to own the best lenses, if the Angenieux was a lot cheaper I'd buy it....anyway mentioning the Tamron and Vivitar is informative.

for me also it's only a hobby and I guess I'm a little bit collector as well Very Happy ....anyway, i don't have anymore my tamron or vivitar so I can't do any comparaison.....but if you want to make this test by yourself, then you could also borrow my Angenieux.......but you will have to pay the shipping cost Very Happy ....

Thanks but that would be too generous to just cure my curiosity Wink But if I can pick up another Kiron 80-200mm f4 at a boot sale for peanuts, I will remember to ask you, if you would be interested to check it out and give an opinion.

Hi

I have been watching this discussion for a few days.

I'd like to make a contribution;

I would be able to send my Angeniuex 70-210 f3.5 to Excalibur.
I think that postage is gonna be a little bit cheaper than from Netherlands.

I have got this lens and it's incredibly good - it has nice rendering and great colours.
it's hard to describe this but the price of the lens actually reflects its quality.

There is one more thing to consider and that thing is 'CHARACTER' of that lens.

BTW the barrel is made of plastic and it's probably a bad joke from Angenieux - I don't understand why they did such a crap barrel.
It's not difficult to break it.

However, the lens is a stunning performer.

Wow, an Angenieux!!

My mate Max Dellaway lens extraordinaire is always telling me about how these are the best zooms ever made...
He sold a cine one to a TV company over here that was 12-300 1.9 all the way through, he sold it to them for $179, 000 back in 1978!!
They liked it so much they bought 2 more and are still using them to this day!
Awesome glass! You are very lucky to have!!
And thank you for sharing some shots!! Very Happy

@orio: thanks a lot for your com, you have said exactly what I tried to say with my poor English...
@ trifox: thanks also for your com and that's true about the focus ring, mine is ok but that is really the weak point from this lens....
@ Hood: I know I'm a lucky guy Very Happy ...and thanks for you nice word as well...
@ Excalibur: honestly, if you look at the samples I have posted here (do not judge the photograph but only the IQ of the lens Wink ), how do you find it and do you think you could archived the same results with your Kiron zoom?.....And again, I do not doubt one second that your Kiron is an excellent lens...........now the question is: do we need such "expensive" lens when you only shoot for the fun and as an "amateur", the answer is probably NO but personally, I don't see any prb if someone use a 3000€ lens to only shoot flowers in his garden, that's not my money and we are all free to do what we want with our money....

Your shots are excellent especially for pop and mine were with the Kiron stopped down and the IQ gap probably narrows then..also my shots were on film so not like for like and the macro is only good:-

Kiron 80-200mm f4 non zoomlock

Kiron 80-200mm f4 non zoomlock

Stan,
You just like taking lots of pictures Wink --superlative images, good to see the flowers coming up.

@ excalibur: indeed nice samples with the Kiron, but difficult to compare image from film and digital and from different subject/light/aperture, etc,....

@ trifox: yes, I've already seen your samples, all beautiful and let shows perfectly the IQ from this lens I think!

and two more samples at infinity, 200mm:
@f5.6:

and f/8:

and last one, close-up wide open:

Very Happy

Indeed difficult, anyway I don't want to ruin your thread by posting shots of a different lens.....and am not sure whether this Kiron is good enough for the "best of lenses" thread, although IMO it's very good esp at 200mm when tested against a few primes that I have.
