And not only amongst Nikkors!
It has great in focus sharpness and great smooth bokeh
Lenses like this that have both (sharpness and smooth bokeh) are very rare.
One of them is the Planar 2/100 but it costs 5-6 times more than the Nikkor. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Good to hear ! I expect this, but I wasn't sure becuase I have no experience with Leica and Carl Zeiss in same focal length. This lens is lot better than 100mm f2.8 Olympus and lot cheaper than 100mm f2 Olympus. _________________ -------------------------------

I dont use mine very often because its equivalent to a 180mm lens on my SD14 and I prefer to use shorter focal lengths but I took it out today to a picturesque local Cemetery and took the following handheld panos...All @ f2.5:

I use their flash guns, but I don't own a Nikon camera. I was given a 50mm pre AI, which is good but not great and this seems to be a theme. _________________ Casual attendance these days |

I wouldn't say that
For my opinion it's average lens but the photos below are very impressive indeed. _________________ Nikon D700

Judging an entire lens lineup based off ownership of a single 45+ year old lens seems a bit unfair to me |

I also think the colours come out very clear on this lens. Maybe an illusion because it's so sharp, I don't know.
It's also relatively cheap to buy for some reason. Sometimes I have seen people pay more for the 100 mm series E.
I rate the 2.5/105 and 2.8/180 ED as my best Nikkors. _________________ DSLR: Nikon D200, Pentax *istDL, Nikon D100 IR converted

Nice samples. I wasn't blown away with my copy though, I prefer the Super Tak or Sankor. Much prefer the Makro-Planar but that's an unfair comparison! _________________ Graham - Moderator
