As I tried to say above, it will allow Nikon film cameras which have an aperture follower (and which don't have the pre-AI "prong") to detect the aperture of the lens and to meter wide open. |
Ah, gotcha! Makes a lot of sense now.
I guess some Nikonians are just as clueless about this Ai business as I am. I just took the previous owner's word for it that all the lenses were Ai or Ai'd.
Looking at the mounts, I see that the 35/2 is not properly Ai'd, either. I'll go and change the descriptions.
