This is 'Best of Lenses' Gallery not a lens review section, I did move it to Manual Focus Lenses.

Wasn't that the one with a Sonnar lens design?

I know 105mm is Sonnar design from this type of lens.

What do you mean? Most 50mm f/1.4 lenses are of overall similar construction, but of course not of equal quality. Progress occurs.

Arrrggghhh, are we REALLY going to go down this overtrodden road again, Fluffpuppy? - "Progress occurs." I think we all know that by now so let's just enjoy seeing how good the older lenses were (and still are).

Joy Division - It's a great old lens, ignore anyone who harps on about how much better newer ones might be Wink . I don't think it's as soft as you might be thinkng. Looking at the "original" of the picture immediately after the helicopter ones, there's actually some pleasing detail there. And I like the out of focus effect too. And if you look at the helicopter pic wide open, the bits that are in focus are actually quite sharp. Close range and f1.4 leaves no margin even for the smallest of errors in focusing. It seems you settled the focus on the bits of the model that were closest to the lens . . . I have problems even using a tripod Smile

Well even the poster said it, and I know it's true. The 60s Nikkors are best left in the past. I used them (a lot) so I know, first-hand.

Here's some info that is quite valuable:

The NIKKOR - The Thousand and One Nights site (Tale 44) describes this lens as a 7/5 Gaussian design. It also describes some of the limitations of the lens.

The same site (Tale 34) describes the NIKKOR-H・C 5cm f/2 as a 6/3 Sonnar design.

The design dates from 1962, and was replaced in 1976 with a new (much improved) design. As I have repeatedly pointed out, the lens is rather primitive by contemporary standards.

+ infinity

No-one wants to read a re-run of fluffpuppy's tirades against Nikon, old Japanese lenses etc etc

Please shut up Fluffpuppy and let joy division enjoy his new purchase.

I think you miss the point on why we enjoy the older lenses so much Smile

I have this lens, I did have the coated version as well, but sold that. My findings are similar to yours. Sadly I have so many 50mm lenses and this one is a way from the top of the pile so it sees little use.. The build quality is top notch though.

Easy fellah. That's a bit strong; try `please refrain'. Wink

FluffPuppy take as last warning... if you can't change I will kick you out from this forum, you did same just week before I did warn you , you said OK, now you did start again , recognize it this unacceptable behavior here!

Sorry if I was a bit strong, just trying to nip it in the bud, didn't mean it offensively, was just being direct.

Yes, my bad, sorry.

LOL! what happened here?

fluffpuppy, yes...it's a given that progress occurs. but most of us here on MF are here because we like lenses that may not be the latest and greatest but we do like the way they feel and even their flaws give them a bit of character. i think we can agree to that.

scsambrook, the pics that follow the test heli shots were shot either in f1.4 or f2, but i did sharpen those a bit. but i do like the lens a lot for it's "ugly", sharp bokeh @ f2. Smile

gaeger, great shot. so many things to look at in that photo.

iangreenhalgh1, i am enjoying my purchase as much as all my other old japanese 50s. i certainly use them a lot more than my CZJ pancolar since they "feel" so much better.

+10 Attilla. I abandoned the "P" forum solely because of the meandering from original post by annoying members and certainly do not want to see it happen to this GREAT forum.

It will not, this is why we have admins and moderators and if needed we will interfere!

It's a very capable lens Smile I have the slightly newer, but way more beat up S-C version kindly passed to me by member Rawhead...not sure it's coated at all anymore to be honest Laughing

Works for me though Smile
