I don't see it as a status symbol, just another tool in the photographer's arsenal. Leica is the status symbol, surely?

Not upper class status symbol. Sony has its fans, mostly middle class...walkmans, camcorders, consumer electronics in general...

This is really good news imho, regardless of what anyone personally thinks about the price, the camera or the company.

yuk, don't remind me! I try to blend out my prior feelings about Sony to fully enjoy my NEX, the positive vibes may make me overcome the trauma, and now this Evil or Very Mad Wink ok, there could be a point, design constraints may never give a NEX a curved grip Sad

A FF mirrorless will prove irresistible to many legacy glass users, regardless of brand. NEX with it's very short register distance is an outstanding platform and a FF NEX certainly truly great news. Let's hope that it comes to the market soon and that it won't take long before there will be various and specially affordable FF mirroless options.

For me , that 5D Olympus in-body stabilisation would be almost equally interesting as the FF ,if it proves real . Still , too much money for me.

Yes, once the road is opened, one can always hope that following models will be priced lower.

Wise words. We should all hope that Sony has sales success with the FF NEX, that might persuade other companies like Samsung and Panasonic to get into the FF game as well, and the competition will drive down prices, making FF accessible to more of us.

I've been trying to save up for my next digital since late last year. It's hard. Plus, going back and forth over which one I should get has been tough. Yes, I wanted a FF camera, but yes also, I wanted a MILC. I was ping-ponging back and forth between the two and then I start reading about the Speed Booster and Lens Turbo and I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe I can dispense with FF. Besides, until quite recently, all rumors were indicating that an FF MILC was at least a year a way. And I just can't wait that long. I'm tired of waiting. But then there's the very real issue of having to save up now for a $3K camera, in all likelihood closer to $4k when at least one lens is figured into the mix. So now the inner debate is whether I should wait until I've saved up enough for this FF NEX (with lens, probably), or should I shoot for a more realistic goal of the NEX 7 update with a Lens Turbo? Or should I wait some more and hope for a cheaper darkhorse entry? Samsung? Panasonic? I'd love to see Pentax enter the fray -- or Ricoh, as it may well be.

If you were having to deal with a tight budget, what would you do?

I would stay with the Nex you currently have until things evolve further.
Or, choose a full frame reflex instead (that is what I would personally do, but only you know what fits you better).
For sure, at 3000 USD, I'd take a Nikon D800 no hesitation. Even if we don't know yet the fulls specs of the Nex FF,
I'm sure that the D800 is an immensely superior camera (which would also let me save a couple hundreds).
Alternatively, if you want a compatibility with old MF lenses, take a 5D Mark II and save even more.

Thanks for your cogent analysis, Orio. Currently I do not own a NEX or any other MILC.

The primary reason why I want an MILC is so I can use my largish collection of Canon FD lenses on a digital body without having to resort to the use of one of those ghastly adapters. So, even though I'd love to have a 5DII for my MF Nikkors and Takumars, the FD limitation is the main reason why I'm not all that interested in obtaining another DSLR for now.

In this case I would look for a good occasion on a Nex 3 or Nex 5. With a limited expense you will be able to use your FD lenses
while waiting for a full frame Nex to get lower in price in the next years.

even if you have been saving since time if it is a FF MILC that you want you are clearly early in the game. So far it's only rumored, once out the time will come that you will afford it. Until then a focal reducer on a NEX is a very good substitute.

Michael , take a nex3 or 5 and don't look back ! You can get them cheap (especially the 3 ) Use and enjoy your loved FD lenses , and meantime , in 1-2 years (of saving dollars), probably the things are going to clarify , it's possible to see also other brands entering this game (and after all Sony will need to sell his new FF sensor to others as they allways did?).

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm not interested in a NEX 3 or 5, though. If I'm gonna get an APS-C NEX, I want that 24mp sensor and I also want a viewfinder. Supposedly the next version of the 7 will be coming out real soon -- maybe at the same time as the FF NEX? So, I'll probably just wait for it. I want the 24mp sensor so I can use the camera with my slide duplicator. A 24mp sensor will result in "scans" of approximately the same resolution as the high-end Nikon Coolscans -- about 4000ppi (pixels per inch).

I refuse to go into debt again from buying photo gear, so I'm having to save up for it. It's tough, but I'm making slow headway.

I've been selling a lot of stuff on eBay, but the going has been slow because of lack of buyer interest in what I'm selling, and I find that it's way too easy to dip into my Paypal savings to pick up various items from eBay as well. Just yesterday, for example, I blew $40 out of my Paypal account for a new battery for my laptop and a couple accessories for my new smartphone. All the items are needed -- especially the battery -- but it's stuff like this that keeps whittling away at my Paypal balance. Oh well. I've still got more stuff to sell, so I need to get busy and list it . . . and hope it sells.

And thanks for reminding me. I have often said that I will never buy v1.0 of anything because there invariably will be bugs or awkwardness with the original version of an item that will be addressed in subsequent versions. If I were in the market for a DSLR, for example, no way would I buy an EOS 5D (v1.0), I'd buy the 5D MkII instead. So, even though this new NEX FF will be an addition to the pre-existing NEX line, it will still be a brand new camera in many ways. So, I just need to be patient and wait a bit longer. And as Kuuan mentions, a 7 with a Lens Turbo will be an adequate substitute until I can afford the real thing.

Besides, at about $4k for the FF camera with one of the anticipated Zeiss optics, the only realistic way I'll be able to come up with those funds in a reasonable time frame without going into debt will require that I sell one or more high-end possession. I have a few guitars that I can part with that will equal that amount, or I can finish some work on one of my motorcycles and sell it. I need to get rid of that bike anyway.

You know, as far as FF NEX cameras go, there is another FF NEX that's worth considering, plus it's already available. No, I'm not talking about the RX-1, I'm talking about the NEX VG900. Yes, it's a camcorder, but it also shoots stills with its FF 24mp sensor. And if you look at the specs for its still mode, it is as full featured as many other high-end DSLRs. Plus it has a 2700k+ pixel EVF and an articulated screen. It has an E mount but it comes with an A mount adapter, plus a decent microphone. It sells for about what the new FF NEX will be selling for -- about $3kUS. I've been giving the VG900 some serious consideration. But at that price, that's all I can do right now, is consider it. Cool

The VG900 is a awesome camera for sure, but shooting a lot of stills with this might not be as pleasent.

Nice review here:

Point taken. I forget Youtube's usefulness way too often. I've just finished watching a half-dozen videos at Youtube on the VG900. Based on the videos, I would describe the VG900's performance as a still camera to be adequate. Not sure I'd want to spend $3k on something that's only adequate for still use. But it does appear to be one helluva video camera.
