Hello guys! I'm new to the forum, please gimme link if this question has been already asked.

I currently own Samsung GX 20 DSLR & I want to buy MF Macro lens.
1:1 only.

Is there any lens database where I can pick the names of the lenses that fall into this category?

PostPosted: Fri May 29, 2009 11:47 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

These are M42 and 1:1:

Macro Takumar (the old one) 50/4
Tomioka Macro Yashinon 60/2.8
Vivitar (Komine) 55/2.8 (available in many mounts)

Some 1:2 ~85-105mm macro lenses were often supplied with 1:2 teleconverter, which makes it 1:1, too

Voigtlander Macro APO Lanthar 125/2.5 (available in many mounts)

M42 mount extension tubes go for peanuts.

I have a M42 Vivitar Series 1 90mm with macro TC, that is a beautiful lens / TC combo. I have not seen a lot of them but if you come across one while searching, I highly recommend it.

Thanx for the tips guys!
Some other options I've just googled. Any of them worthy?

- Fujica 55mm/f3.5 M42, Tomioka/Mamiya/Yashica 60/2.8
- Tamron Adaptol 90mm f2.5/2.8

I wonder if they are 1:1?

What are "OK" prices for them on the second hand market?
I'd like sub $200 options, but i can spend more if the price difference is justified.

P.S. I do want macro lens without extension tubes and/or teleconverters.

Tomioka Macro Yashinon 60/2.8 is 1:1 as I stated in my previous post.

I think the cheapest 1:1 lens, which is one of the few lenses, which fits into sub $200 category, is Vivitar 55/2.8. It's quite sharp even wide-opened, but its CA is stronger than on some other macro lenses.

1- It is 1:2
2- You forget the kiron (vivitar, dine) 105 /2.8 which is
-1:1
-ABSOLUTE TOP quality (tokina/vivitar s1 90mm/2.5 and kiron 105/2.8 are the 2 best oem macro lenses on the market but tokina is 1:2 direct only)

Correct me if I'm wrong...

There are two versions of the Tamron SP 90/2.5 both 1:2 lenses.

The newer 90/2.8 models are all 1:1. And the adaptall-2 version is naturally MF.

All great lenses. Love my 90/2.5.

Had to google it Smile.

SP 90/2.5 is 1:2 (model 52B and 52BB)
SP 90/2.8 is 1:1 (model 72A?)

Newer is supposed to be marginally sharper than the previous models. Newer seems pretty rare in this side of the globe... as it was quite rapidly replaced with AF-models.

Hi Speereo,
Is there a reason you dont want to use a tube?

Keep in mind some lenses will cost more because of the rarity of the glass, not just the user value. You mentioned the Fujinon EBC lens, this lens dosent come up on the bay often. I search Fujinon gear once a week and havent seen this lens listed in prehaps a year or more, until today.

All prices are not based on user value alone.

Why a joke ??

Tamron is the third excellent macro oem lens but Tokina/vivitar s1 & Kiron are a slight bit ahead

Not to cause a argument ... but,
Umm... This is a very debatable statement.

Keep in mind that many people prefer certain lenses for different reasons, not just some data sheet info, and trying to put them in order, such as this is #1 and so forth is really a preference from individual to individual.

i was ONLY speaking in terms of optical quality, not handling or anything else

Perhaps you own a Tamron and do not want it to be said he is only third ???

But third at that level is still a compliment !!!

Nope, no Tamron. I just know that many of us like lenses for many other reasons than what a spec sheet says.

there is also the rare and famous
"Kilfitt 40mm f2.8"

(attention: there are 2 versions: one 1:1 macro and other 1:2 macro)

if you find one, buy it!

Absolutely lovely discussion. Thank you all guys! :^)
Now I have the list of proper macro lenses.
Talking about the rarity of the glass - it's not an issue, now with the BIG picture I can stalk my second hand shops. I live in Russia, St. Petersburg, here one can find even VERY rare lenses like VOIGTLANDER MACRO APO-LANTHER 125mm F2.5 SL - but at 200% of e-bay price (approx. 800 USD).
But sometimes the prices are really low. Starting from 12 bucks for 50mm Helios.
I will gladly post here once my search is over.
Thanx again.

Oh, talking about tubes and lens turn. I dont want to lose A. Light, B. Control

PostPosted: Mon Jun 01, 2009 8:16 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Speereo: Typical ebay price of Voigtlander 125/2.5 is $1100-$1200 now...

Btw., do you have a possibility to get Voigtlander 40/2 in M42 mount?

PostPosted: Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:47 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Oh, I see.
The $800 price is half year old. Maybe they are more expensive now.
I will look into 40/2. Wink

You can always add light.
Loss of control?

I shoot with tubes often, no issues here. My favorite macro lens is my Nikkon micro with an M2 tube. You may lose light, but fixing that is a breeze depending on what your shooting. Always use a rail sysyem when shooting ture macro, I dont think you'll have any control issues. (Depending on what you mean by control)

@ spiralcity
I meant that
A. i lose several F stops with tubes.
I would have used them, but I don't need closer macro than 1:1, especially due to shallow DOF.
B. I lose control with reversed lens, they aren't exactly designed for that...

IMO a proper macro lens doesn't need AF at all so why not go for cheaper options...

I never use AF lenses. The Nikkor Micro is MF, and a very good lens.

In any case, good luck with your search. I'm sure you will find what you need.
