Bought it for €170 incl. shipment (bargain down from €190) with slight fungus infection

from:

Austria - very friend chap to deal with!

Can't wait to try it and compare against my Tokina SD 400mm f5.6.

Some info:

I wonder now how easy would it be adopt this lens to Nikon bodies?

Gee Attila, I hope not Sad

Optically, this Leica lens is suppose to be legendary and almost on par with the EOS 400mm L glass! No way my Tokina lens can match that except for its compactness!

Probably agree with you for most of the R's. But some are special. The 28 Elmarit v2, 90AA, 100 Makro APO, 180 Elmarit APO, 280 Telyt APO. Shot them all and they are quite impressive and really something above the ordinary. Whether they're worth what is asked is another matter altogether.

I've never used this lens so can't really make a knowledgeable comment . . . BUT ( ! ) when it came out it was hailed as a masterpiece of simplicity and quality, especially in LeicaFotografie magazine (yes, yes, I know, they would say that). Anyway, the published pictures looked very good and for years it basked in its reputation although it was only ever sold in small numbers. But, strange to say, in recent times some people have begun muttering that it really isn't such a good lens at all, especially on another forum which must be nameless Rolling Eyes So, I'm really interested to learn what StingOM finds when he uses it.

As for Leica R lenses in general, in the past (but at different times) I had a 60mm Macro Elmarit, and an early 90mm Elmarit. They were simply beautiful lenses. It's pointless to say they were "better" than similar ones from other makers, they were just "different". Kodachromes shot with them had a vibrance all of their own and the 90 in particular was, to me, especially pleasing. Yet today we regularly see Leica "experten" cheerfully quoting Erwin Puts* out of context and downgrading its performance to the point where anyone who'd had one wouldn't recognise it as the same lens.

Sorry folks, I'm getting on my soap-box and drifting off-topic Embarassed I hope StingOM enjoys his new lens.

* for anyone who hasn't yet discovered Erwin Puts he can be found at http://imx.nl/photo/ He makes for interesting reading but you have to remember that he lives in a world where splitting hairs is the norm and where the difference between (say) a value of 1234567 and 1234568 is often made to seem huge.

It`s a good lens with some drawbacks e.g. it`s field curvature.
Just go out and play with it, I am sure you will enjoy it.
By the way servicing and cleaning this lens is very easy, just unscrew the hood and the glas elemet.

PS I love mine very much, look at my samples:
