I bought this a while back and made modification so that it can fit my sony a200 but somehow I just forgot all about it. While cleaning my stuff I stumble on it and took it for a spin.
I must say I really like this lens. It is sharp wide open at all focal lengths! I shot few portraits with it and I really like the soft yet sharp pics it produced. Colors are really good. I think it can be a very good portrait lens. Unfortunately it cannot go to infinity (may be till 50 feets wide open at 70mm - good enough for me) so will use it for portraits and abstract shooting only. Some samples:
With no PP
35mm
70mm
with light PP
with medium PP

This is what I call sharp shots...
Never thougth that a short zoom like this one could provide such neat shots in all the surface, corners included.
My favs, the #3 and the one of the motorbike.

This was one the lens made in collaboration with leica if I remember correctly. Its leica counterpart fetches quite a amount of money. I guess around 800-900 bucks. However this can be get for next to nothing may be around 50 bucks with awesome image quality !! |

After I accidentally ended up with a Minolta SRT 201, I bought this lens. And because this lens was so good, I bought an XE-7 and an XE-5.

Yes there are the two variants you mention. I don't think IQ wise there's much difference, though Opinions Of Course Will Vary (this being the internet after all)... The macro thing is a button that allows a fairly limited amount of focus/zoom in a close-up mode. Not the most flexible thing, but a Nice To Have addition to a wonderful lens. _________________ -Jussi

Even I think so. Having 1:4 macro is not hurting anything |
