One of the advantages of living in a small town is that you can get out at any time of the day and still feel safe even with a 5D + Distagon 1.4/35 at your neck.
So when I saw it was snowing, that's what I did - and went out for a stroll in the park even if it was past midnight. Only precaution, when you are wearing thick hats, and on the fresh snow, it is very easy for someone to approach you silently behind your shoulders - shoes on fresh snow make little to no sound- so every 30 seconds or so I turned around to verify that the way behind me was clear.

I took only the Distagon as with a 35mm like this one, I can do nearly everything. I meant to shoot for B&W, but a few shots turned out nice in colours, too, so I also add a smaller page with a vew colour ones:

B&W:

Shooting during snowfall is a lot of fun

One of the (many) things I love about this lens is that I can shoot lamplights and do not worry about the flare.

Although, I really like warm lamp light in snowy scenes, I also prefer your b&w shots.
You did a great job converting these pics.

My favs are 8, 11, 19 and esp. 12 - great composition!!

I must confess, I didn't Embarassed
I just used the "monochrome" preset in Breezebrowser (which is the same as in Canon software).
All merit for the image tones belong to the lens and it's ability to render the tonal shades. 5D also has a big role of course but not all lenses on the 5D render like this. The Distagon 1.4/35 is the King Midas of lenses: whatever it touches, it turns to gold. Whenever I take this lens with me, I know I'm going to be thrilled/amazed by the results.

In fact, #12 looks very much "Carstenstyle" Smile

Me too, luv the BW pics. The sidewalk scene with the street lights really
stands out as my favorite, but I haven't looked at all of these.

Nice work, Orio!

OK, that might have helped a lot! I am happy for you that you have found your kind of dream lens! Very Happy

Really? Well, yes, I'd like to agree, if I may. Actually, I am honoured!

Wow this is a nice scene. It just looks so tranquil. My favorite is number 10. Of course who can resist a scene like this snow together with water at night. I am envious Orio. If I go outside right now the wind would knock me over and the rain would soak me. We have wild weather on the west coast right now. The silence of snow looks much nicer.

I know from experience that snow and coasts do not make a good match. When I lived in Stavanger, sudden snow tempest could come, with polar winds, with snowflakes twice as big as standard snowflakes in Italy and I am not kidding. In 10 minutes only everything would be covered completely in white. But then the Gulf Stream resumed it's job and in half a day most snow was gone.

These capture a certain essence of the evening. I FEEL the tranquility and silencing aspect of the snow, especially in the fine rendering of the black and white images.

The lens shows, even in this limited web presence, that it has the "touch" that you are expounding, Orio!

I am actually rather astounded with the quality here.

Oh yes we see those storms also. This year however just rain, wind and rain. The house is shaking so bad from the wind that both of the dogs are hiding behind the sofa. It would be kind of funny if they were not actually so scared. Laughing actually it is still funny at least to look at. We have one big black lab and one chihuahua. Both are behind the couch with just there tails sticking out Laughing

Thanks Laurence (and Cosmin) I was hoping that this aspect could pass through the glass of the monitors Smile

Yes I remember too that kind of wind, one day I was with a friend of mine who came to visit from here, we rented a car and went on the mountains surrounding Stavanger, it was cold but sunny most of the day, all at sudden at about half the afternoon, a cloud arrived and a terrible wind started, with snow falling almost parallel to the ground, not kidding! The wind was so strong, that inside the car, I could not, with all of my strenght (which is not little) open the car door! Not kidding again.
In 5 minutes, maybe less, a thick layer of snow deposited onto the road asphalt and instantly became ice pack. It changed from sunny-clean to snowy-undriveable in 5 minutes.
I don't remember a wind so strong except for the two tornados I have been inside (one near here the other one in Eivissa/Ibiza).

did you take most shots at F5.6 ? I ask you because for my 35 1.4 with 400D under F5.6 my borders are not so good

This shows that you are not a snow expert Wink
For snowing, temperatures must be around 0° C . With colder temperatures, it does not snow (at least, this is what happens here)
It was worst in the previous nights, when it was -4°C

Only a couple shots were so much stopped down. The majority was taken between f/2 to f/4. A couple ones wide open. Is your copy AE or MM? My AE copy is slightly softer in the corners wide open, but it has probably a tad more 3D. Anyway for your corners to be soft until f/5.6 on a crop camera, perhaps the lens has something wrong. On a crop camera, it should be almost perfect already wide open. Give the lens a try with film full frame, and if it's still so problematic, send it to Zeiss for recalibration.
There is a form to download on their site, that you must enclose in the package with the lens. They will charge you for a checkup but if it turns out that the lens needs calibration, and you accept to have it done, the checkup sum will not be charged in the final invoice.

Great series Orio.
I enjoyed them a lot.

Orio
Your story of the winds and snow in Norway remind me of the infamous Fohn wind in Geneva. A temperature drop of more than 15C in less than 30 mins can (as legend has it) cause people to die of the cold as they cross the river on the main bridge. I have experienced this wind, but not crossing the bridge - and it is devastatingly cold.

PS your pictures are as usual full of atmosphere and flavour.

Great shots - particularly the B&W conversions.

I'm also really impressed with the lack of flare.

And to make it even more impressive I will add that the front glass is large (lens diameter is 67mm and most of them are glass).

This kind of performance, in difficult conditions, more than the "absolute sharpness", is what justifies the investment you make in a lens.
With some lenses, you have to struggle and use precautions to obtain results of excellence. With lenses like this one, you really have to struggle very hard to make a trash shot!
