I'm searching for a nice vintage lens to buy on the budget because I have economic problems. my widest lens I ever own is the old canon zoom 28 - 90mm, it is a very cheap lens with bad cromatic aberrations, very dark and unsharp.
I really wish to try something much more sharp, and fast in therm of aperture. every focal lenght from 28 to descend will be ok! the sweetest spot would be 24/25mm but I'm scared by the chance to find higher price the more I descend down in the abyss of the treasure hunts.
I'll be really grateful for your reply, thx! |

The Tokina RMC 24mm/F2.8 is most probably the best you can get for relatively little money.
How it compares to some other more expensive lenses can be seen here:

thanks a lot for your reply, I saw there are different mounts for this lenses. which mount version do you suggest me to take to work best with the canon 7D please? I couldn't find m42 verions is it because it doesn't exist or because is rare to find? I'm scared to buy a random mount version because I'm scared to lost infinity focus, I'm not expert and I'm not sure all the mounts will work good with ring adapters for canon eos. thx! |

If you want to go a little wider on a budget, the Kiron-made Vivitar 20/3.8 may be a good option:

Would not the Canon 18-55 be a good choice for the Canon 7D.
It is certainly a good performer and very cheap

Yes, considering that you're shooting a crop-body Canon, and that you have budget constraints, I'd also recommend the 18-55 AF, but very important: get the type II or later. The type I is not even worth messing with. I have a Type II that came with the Canon I bought eight years ago, and it is impressively sharp.
18mm is the 35mm equivalent to 28mm or so. You'd need to get down to 16mm for a 24mm equivalent focal length, which is uncommon and expensive, when you're talking 35mm glass.
But if you really want a 35mm lens, I'd recommend the Tamron 17mm f/3.5. Good thing about it is one of a number of mounts will work with EOS. Not so good is the price. The Tamron usually sells for upwards of $200, sometimes less. _________________ Michael

Not sure what your budget is but I had a copy of the Tokina at-x 11-16 for my eos 60d that was marvelous. It isn't exactly vintage but crop body and vintage wide and inexpensive are somewhat mutually exclusive. _________________ photos are moments frozen in time |

Also for info purposes. I had no issue with mirror clearance on my 60 D (not identical to th 7d but very similar) with Olympus OM, Yashica/Contax, Pentax PK, Exakta, Topcon RE, Praktica B, or of course m42 lenses. So start from the assumption it WILL work during searches then when you find a potential candidate, research that example for mirror conflicts with your camera type. _________________ photos are moments frozen in time |

It is available in M42 as well. Obviously rather hard to find nowadays. However, other mounts may be adaptable to your Canon too but I'm no expert on Canon (never had one myself).
Considering that your Canon D7 is APS-C format you may even think of a wider lens which is most probably more expensive. Maybe the cheapest solution is in this case to look for the 18-55mm kit lens instead. That would at least give you a field of view comparable to 27mm on FF. _________________ Thomas Bernardy

How about the Sigma 16mm f2.8 Filtermatic, if you can find one, bit soft in the corners but on the 7d crop that will be negated. Don't think there's much about as this at f2.8, and you may get focus confirmation if you get the right one. _________________ EVEN A BLIND SQUIRREL FINDS A NUT NOW AND THEN! |
