This is a good idea! I would prefer to donate 8% from what I sell to Attila rather than giving it to eBay. About 10 people from this website bought testers from me because they have seen the marketplace thread and eBay and PayPal got a good chunk out of the money.

Cheers,
Florin

For all the lenses I just sold on ebay, I did make a profit but had to pay ebay €85 + paypal knocks off a % on what the buyer pays me!

And to think of it, I offered them here for much lesser and would have gladly donated to the site instead!

We definitely need to highlight the 'make a donation' button a little more and also figure out how to donate ... as I said above, I want to donate but the b*tch of paypal makes money on that too! I admit I clicked on 'make a donation' many times but when the paypal site opens, I close the window Rolling Eyes

I think you're right on everything except the minimal profit part. The point is certainly not to make maximum profit, but I think sellers here can certainly make some money without damaging the community.

Glad you (almost) agreed. What I meant is that sellers don't try to maximize their profit, but don't intend to lose money. "Minimal profit" was wrongly stated. Does "fair profit" or "fair deal" fit better?

@hari: 85€???

I think there should be two categories (for simplicity)

1) Doug's Gear

2) Other...

I agree with Rawhead too... couldn't have put it better.

I have quite a bit to sell over the next month or two so I'd welcome a more organised marketplace.

So which Categories would you like to see ?

I think a system that will keep the current spirit of the marketplace, but make it more easy for both the seller and buyer would be perfect. That's why I voted for "Classified Ads", assuming that's what it would be. Something that will:

1. Make it easy for potential buyers and sellers to see what's currently "on the market"
2. Allow for feedbacks.
3. Allow for rudimentary categories (lenses; bodies; accessories; digital vs. film; etc.)

I dislike online shop solutions for antiques - occasional sellers have no particular impulse to keep their inventory updated, and after a while, many things that are listed have already been sold outside the system (and as a buyer, you can only hope for a refund if it is a immediate payment system). And auctions? Sorry, but even the next biggest platform after ebay in Germany has failed to gain the critical mass of bidders needed, and has turned into a mere shop system for bottom feeders...

Classifieds would give it a bit more structure, without breaking the spirit. Or leave it as it is.

Yes, right. Seems most users prefer to not change anything and less people prefer classifieds system. I did try to organize better with sub forums let we see how people like and if not works I will reverse back the old system.

A bit of a pain to follow sales in about 10 different forum areas. But there's always the good old "new posts" page to be notified of new items, which is what I'm using.

Seems that at least people posting opinions like what I envisioned as a "Classified Ads" Smile

In terms of categories, I think it should be really really basic. We don't have too much volume (yet) and part of the fun here is finding out about things that are on sale that we didn't even know we wanted (lol). So just browsing through, say, "Lenses" would be fun.

Now, for people who are looking for specific items, it would be nice to have a tagging system, much like Flickr tags. The seller/buyer can add whatever they like in the "tags" box to make it easier for people to search/filter the ads.

So, if I want to sell my Switar, I would go to the "Lens" sale forum, and create a listing:

[FS] Kern Switar 25mm F1.4 AR [$250]

Then, in the body would be item description, item photos, maybe sample pics, and other info (shipping/handling/Paypal fee, etc.).

Then in the Tags box I'd put in:

-----
#C-mount #micro-4/3 #Kern #Switar #Bolex #Paillard #cine
-----

etc., things that people might be searching for. For tags that are often repeated, there could be a "master list" that is maintained by the admins, and listed in a popup box either in alphabetical order OR in the order of frequence (e.g., #m42 #Zeiss #Leica etc.). But I'm getting into too much detail here Very Happy

Have just had my first tour of the new-look Marketplace, and have a suggestion.

Perhaps it's been mentioned already in this thread (surfing via my phone at the moment), but it would be a good idea to request that sellers change the status in the Title field to SOLD once they've concluded their transactions. It doesn't take much time, and may save time for those people who are searching for an item.

Just a suggestion Wink

Can I ask any moderator to move my Tevidon 16/1.8 thread, which is now located in "Nikon" forum(?), to the general "Marketplace" forum?

Thanks Wink

Strange. Now we are back to the original style?

PostPosted: Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:16 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Is it possible to have the categories and an option to see everything in a single page? That way everybody will be happy.

Also this would be good for times when you want to search specific items and don't have time to fool around and for the times when you are bored and decide to browse trough everything thinking that maybe something interesting will come up. Like when you are searching trough eBay for "vintage camera". You don't really care what comes up but you hope to spot an interesting item.

Cheers,
Florin

Wink

Thank goodness it's back to how it was...it was too much hassle having all the sub categories IMO

I disagree Attila - it was simply an idea that didn't work out this time. Given time and fine-tuning, I'm sure it could have integrated quite well into the rest of the forum.

Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to implement the idea though Wink

Sad well, the current system is still good but I liked the last iteration of the classified

I agree with rawhead that tags should be implemented. This way we can continue to browse through everything as usual. And if someone want to narrow down to a specific brand, or mount, it can be done easily too.

Yes, only problem people use it or not.

What bugs me about the current system is that I'm often too late to see lenses being offered. It seems the first lucky person to send a PM gets the lens and nobody else can bid for it.

Some people can't be on line as often or at the same time as others. At present it's the law of the jungle and I think we could make it fairer to all.

I must say, I quite liked it when a few days ago the Marketplace was split into different categories for the different mounts. Maybe some expanding upon that idea would be a great way to go - something to simplify it a bit while sticking to the idea. Maybe split it up into Cameras, Lenses and Misc. Equipment and then have some mandatory things to supply in the post like the mount, maker etc. and then create a filter that displays only the mount or whatever you're looking for (for example let's say i'm looking for a M42 lens -> go to the Lenses section, apply the M42 filter and wham -> only M42 lenses left visible.). I think this idea would work out really well without changing all that much to the current marketplace while still bringing a positive change.

This is hard ... I have no idea how can be more fair. Now is similar than real shop who entry first that buyer will take it , this is fair I think.

I guess this forum structure is not usable for organizing, best idea to put into title important marks like [FS][M42][WIDE] with this tokens means an M42 wide angle lens on sale or [FS][NIKON][PORTRAIT] blah blah. Most people did refuse to split them to subforums and I believe their had right. If we make change I think a good classified add system will be serve us best.

I have experience with another forum that tried to force people to use tags in subjects. They stopped that probably because the mods spent too much time correcting subjects from people who didn't knew the rules. It's a very good idea to tag the subject but it have apparent flaws, the only way I can see improvements is if there is checkboxes for some standard tags (FS/WTB etc.) when creating new topic so the use don't have to write it them self.
