Olmypus e-420 has been disappointing, very difficult to focus.

Put a split screen into and no difficulties any more. I use Olympus E-1 with Katz Eye split screen. Any DSLR from Canon or Olympus will be fine with split screen or AF adapter.

I've a 40D and like it very much. Live view is great for critical focus. Also the Canon matte screen is useful.

I think this is a good choice if you're looking at buying a crop body camera. I would not recommend the 450D or 1000D, etc., since the viewfinder is so small it is difficult to focus. Yes, they have Live View, but this cannot be used in all situations (like bright sun for example). The 40D and 50D have bigger viewfinders, plus they just have a better feel than the small Canons.

I am very happy with 40D and use only C/Y lenses
I would like a smaller body but focusing is easier with prism than mirror viewfinder
liveview is not a solution for my way of shooting, but is great for landscape

meaning that live view - focusing is not good for 'street photography'?
I do not have any experience with live view and I am curious..

To OP, Canon would be my first choice for using C/Y lenses, over Oly for it's x2 magnification
Can anybody tell which would be, in used market, the cheapest available Canon good for MF lenses which has good viewfinder ( pentaprism )?

Yes, live view is unuseable for street photography for two reasons, because it is not possible to focus well with the camera in hand, especially if (like in most cases) you want to use enlargement to see details, and secondly because you need to take the camera at the level of your eyes (except for those cameras who offer a basculatable LCD) and this does not make you the most unnoticed person in a public place...

You might want to try the ME-1 viewfinder magnifier for your Olympus if you're looking for cheap options...

E-420's fine if you have: 1.) AF confirm adapter 2.) ME-1 eyecup magnifier and/or 3.) split-screen screen.
