Is this a really good lens?

I need a zoom lens. I saw this one and I'd like to know if this is a good lens to use in fashion photography.

I saw on USA ebay for 1500$ but I saw an auction in UK ebay for 250€ ( 4 days left)

the version 4.5 is from 1974, I would not wait great result

I think Canon 85mm 1.8 it's the only one I could buy. But only in second hand. Crying or Very sad

the 70-200/4L non-IS is very well recommended and at $600 is quite a good deal.

Sigma also makes a 50-135/2.8 that only covers a DX / APS-C sensor for about $750.

when I was a Canon user i really wanted the 70-200/4L. you can't miss with that lens...

If you don't need AF there are many really nice options in this range for little money. For $100 or less you can find zoom offerings from Tamron, Kiron, And Nikon that are quite stellar. If you can spend more look for Zeiss. The Contax 35-70 will translate as a 50-100 on your canon. I have seen them go for as little as $250 (with luck). The 4/80-200 Poilu has and it is excellent with Constant f4 $300-$400. I had for a while a Contax 35-135. It is a superb zoom but a bit large. You can find them for under $700 (although most on ebay are BIN for much more).

EUR250 is a big budget for a manual focus zoom. If you need Auto Focus I don't know it might be light. I have a Contax mint 4/80-200 for sale in the Market place thread ($375). You can take it if you want. You should try a Kiron or Viv Series 1 for $50 first. You might be surprised.

I bought from Richard just a few days before a Tamron SP 70-210mm f3.5

This lens is a very good one, I suggest to take it for you also.

I vote for Tamron SP against Kiron and others.

More good advise. The point is try a less expensive zoom first. Best to save the budget for you Prime lenses.

I guess better to take two bodies and prime lenses than any zooms.

Film bodies are really cheap, and used crop bodies are also going on low prices. You can find a few quality zoom out there, but most of the people just love primes.

I prefer prime lenses but in this case I think it would be good to have a zoom to shoot some fashion sessions.

I know maybe AF lenses should do better job but they are too expensive to me right now.

Otherwise MF zoom lenses with great quality aren't cheap too..right?

Tamron SP 70-210mm f3.5 is a great quality lens and if you are lucky you can get cheaply.

Tamron SP 80-200mm f2.8 rare but very good one.

Tamron SP 60-300mm also pretty good one an very cheap.

Only Ebay item number need in Ebay brackets, don't put whole url.

You can mount on 400D but this lens is use less too slow.

I don't think so Tokina zooms reach Tamron SP quality.

Too slow on a fashion show, you need fast lens as possible. Difficult to find speedy zooms if I am in you I definitely not try to go there with this slow lens.

Oh I see, on beach doesn't matter which one you take on plenty of sunshine almost everything works well looks Luis samples he can get superb result with any 5$ lenses.

For fashion runway work maybe a zoom is important. But for studio or location shoots a prime will serve you better. Best to take a mid tele that is f2.8 and sharp open. Look for a Contax 2.8/85mm or 2.8/135mm. Both can be found within your budget the 135 is cheaper. I think Klaus has(or had) an 85 for sale. Other options and maybe even less expensive at times. Nikkor 2.5/105(beautiful), kiron 2.8/105macro, Pentacon 2.8/135(bokeh monster). The monster is not so good open. The others are quite nice. Look in the MFL galleries for samples.

Yes, he wasn't on the beach , ask him to make samples as usual:) it will be same excellent than before I am pretty sure.
