Any experience, samples, or advise?

I'm planning a leica r kit 24? 35, 90, 180 .
Is the 24 as good as the Contax 25?

Orio, Henry, anyone else ?

Better off with the latest version 3 cam Leica 28/2.8 just before it went ROM if that FL suits you. The 24 is a tired old optic and a Minolta design to boot while the 21 Angulon is likewise unremarkable. I'd go with the Contax if 24-25mm is your need.

As for the 180, absolutely avoid the first version of the 180/2.8 (series VIII)--heavy, large and inferior optics compared to the later, more compact E67 version (this one can be had at a good price; ~US450/300 euros). A nice all-around tele with good shrpness and color. The 180/3.4 APO is well respected (just got mine and need to convert to Nikon mount) BUT it is best at near-infinity and infinity focus and this really makes it a special purpose rather than general tele. From samples I've seen, it's nothing special close in. It's price has been rising recently; sells for ~US$750-850.

Andy, I seriously doubt any old 25mm lens can really be better than the Distagon 25 MM version. Maybe come close, maybe same good. But better...hm.

I only look for same good. Leica R is nice because one adapter can stay in an Eos body and your set.
I have a late summicron 35 and 50 and soon an Elmarit 90. Would like something wise to be handy. Maybe it will be outside the leica mount.
24,35,90 is ideal for me.

Thanx for your input guys.

Hi,

as James already stated, the 24 Elmarit is an old Minolta Formula with floating elements if i remember correct. The 24mm doesnt fit to my EOS 5D because hitting the mirror. So the only thing i can tell about this lens, is my very short experience on a 400D Crop cam. The results on this cam where average but not more. So i decided to sell the lens again. I think, the Contax 25 will fit lots better.

Your Leica Kit should contain the following lenses:

Leica Elmarit 2.8/35mm above # 3.000.000 E55 with build in hood
(IMHO better than Summicron 2/35mm i also own)
Leica Summicron 2/90mm also above 3.000.000 E55
Leica Elmarit 2.8/180mm MKII (the short one is the best, Pre APo)

if you plan to complete this set a very good wideangle lens is also the Leica Elmarit 2.8/28mm near 3.000.000....

short sample.. Förde bay of Kiel, Germany during "Kieler Woche"...

Sailship MIR from Russia...

I have all of them and are very satisfied. Try to avoid the older Leicaflex 2-cam Versions.

Cheers
Henry

Have that 24mm Elmarit. Nothing bad about it, worked nice, but did not impress me to much. Bought it because my 19mm is so big and heavy, wanted a smaller lens. It is on the list for reselling again.

Darn! whats wrong with the 2-cam versions?

I just ordered the 50/2 summicron + 90/2.8 + 135/2.8 + 180/4!

Cheers,
Hari

Hi Orio,

Are all Distagons good performers? Any on the red list?

If I had to buy the 'best of the best' 8mm/16mm/20mm/24mm/28mm/35mm/50mm/85mm/90mm/135mm - what am I looking at? Price not an issue (I know thats a big question and you can probably re-write the code of the entire internet with as many characters)

I'm getting a little tired of buying-trying-selling-buying-trying-selling and of course, the loss of money on each transaction

Many Thanks for your patience and advice,
Hari

No dogs amongst Contax Distagons Very Happy
Regarding Contax, you may want to take care however in buying the MM version of the following (as opposed to AE version) because of the better corner performance wide open:

Distagon 25/2.8
Distagon 28/2.8

Of all Contax Distagons, the one that I find less exciting is the 35/2.8
Nothing bad with it, it just does not shine for me - the images do not have the same "presence" as the 35/1.4 or 28/2.8 or 25/2.8

Thanks for the help Orio!

Am off to look for the 25/2.8 and the 28/2.8

Well, I'm not in touch with the latest Ebay prices, since I basically stopped buying Contax lenses (as I have all of those that I can afford, and maybe a coupld ones that I also should not afford to have! Laughing )
But
let's say a 25/2.8 MM should be around 350 Euros, while a 25/2.8 AE should be around 200-250 Euros
for the 28/2.8, a MM copy should sell for 200-250 Euros and a AE copy for 150-200 Euros.

Hi again Orio,

I just found out that the 25 2.8 is also available as M42

How do these compare to the contex mount lenses? Same/inferior/superior?

I'm selling my d90 and getting the 5d mk II so is there any known issue on a full frame camera?

Best Regards,
Hari
