Westlicht seems to be doing well.

Art markets - and classic car markets- not only function for people enjoying art and cars, but also for storing value in objects and at times for buying prestige. The rarer cameras have entered this sphere.

One practical use for optical collectibles that are compact and relatively valuable, might be for people in wobbly eurozone countries, - and elsewhere-, to store value while currencies stabilize. Even without increases in value, it might be better than accepting an unpredictable 20%-50%-70% loss on savings.

Even bourgeois Hermagis or Zunow might serve as liferafts, as might some more recent stuff if too many buyers try to climb aboard. Like gold, no interest income and only medium liquidity, but one chooses liferafts on the basis of availabilty , not comfort.

Well, Id rather invest $7000 in gold today than in a 35-70 Leica zoom.

Leica-R items are twin ice as investment many people believe they are keep their value well, which is not true at all. Some piece yes , but most of them not. Friend of mine bought Leica-R Summilux 50mm f1.4 for less than half price , than genuine owner bought, boxed mint and after test I sold among to him also less than Ebay price level. May this is not true to Leica-M due 'that is real luxury' Wink if anybody buy stuff as investment have to select well and investment piece can come from any vendor.

Rarer bits can increase steeply, more common may fluctuate; look at manual focus optics before and after 4\3 was introduced .

Rollercoaster value movement, the need for insight and differing short and long term value change - as well as exposure to economic cycles and changing fashions, applies to bonds and shares as well.

Collections, however, have two added features; scarcity and individual desire. This does not override the other factors, but does offer some guidance.
