Yeah, but I've bought it from a pro seller (camera shop) in Germany and the Deutsche Post still is very fast, although it is almost Christmas. Last week I got two parcels that only needed ONE day!

And I have ordered it as "collect on delivery" - this often is very fast, since they only get the money when the lens is being delivered.

So I am optimistic. Wink

Never have the girlfriends of your sellers ship the items.
I was just informed that the Sonnar I bought, was insured for the amount of Swiss Francs, but wrongly declared as Euros Sad

Look good, if the lens broke or disappear you will get more money from insurance

That means a minimum of 30 Euros more of customs fees.
However the seller is a very correct person, he already said he will cover the difference. But the annoying thing is I have to fork out the extra money now while the refund will arrive on Paypal.

Yes Swiss is not in Europe
It look like a mint lens so I think it worth it

I read that Olympia-Sonnar was made in 1936
Is Olympia-Sonnar a different model than the normal 180 2.8MM ?
At keh they sell exc 180 2.8 MM for 180e and exc+ for 320e

Olympia Sonnar was the original Zeiss model designed for the Berlin 1936 Olympics, when Zeiss was one.
After the split, both houses (Jena and Oberkochen) kept producing the lens, because it was a very successful design.
The design of the lens in both Zeiss houses was not changed over the years: it is exactly the same design as the 1936 Sonnar.
The Nikkor 2.8/180, at least the pre-AI version, is also a sure copy of the Olympia Sonnar. The Russian Jupiter-6 also is.
This means of course that this lens was surpassed in performance by more recent designs. For instance, my Tele-Tessar 200 (old scheme, but new realization) has better MTF figures than the 2.8/180.
The 2.8/180 has however a character of his own, in particular the fantastic bokeh, which is the reason why the lens design was not changed.
Of course, the newer versions of the 2.8/180 give better performance than the original Olympia Sonnar, because of the multi-coating and because of the higher quality of the optical glass.

I am very curious to compare this Contax version with the Jena MC version.

From this one I have 5 copies some of them outstanding lens.
I rate higher than MC version and any other 180mm lens what I have.

OK, back to the topic. Wink

I have received the Leica lens today. Well, actually my wife has received it, since I had to work long today. Wink

But when I came home, the lens was waiting. Of course, I got nervous in an instant. I did not see the lens before I bought it, I just read a short ad saying which lens that was and the price. Since it was published by a southern German cam shop in a German photo magazine, I was able to call the store and ask about the lens.
I guess if you ask the write questions and use the correct terms, they quickly know that they are not dealing with a complete fool or an absolute beginner. Wink
They described the lens as used but in good condition with clear glass. This and the two week refund option made me buy the lens.

Well, they told the truth!

The lens is not mint, but even at first sight, i.e. without cleaning, it looked fine. Now that the glass and the barrel are clean, I would call it "almost mint".

Why do some people not clean their lenses when they sell? Shocked Question

I got this lens for € 100,-. Now, clean, it looks like twice as much...at least!!!

OK, back to my first impressions...

The lens is heavy! I mean not tremendously heavy, but much heavier than I had expected from a rather small lens like that.

A comparison:

Asahi S-M-C Takumar 3.5/35 - 160 gr.
MIR-1B 2.8/37 - 220 gr.
Porst WW 1.8/35 MC - 300 gr.
Nikkor-O 2.0/35 - 350 gr.
Leica Elmarit-R 2.8/35 - 440 gr.

So, you see that the "rule" "the faster the heavier" is not always right. Wink

What can I say? It's a Leica!

The aperture blades snap in when the ring is turned. And the focus ring is ever so smooth, just like velvet! It just feels great - even better than the Nikkor's one.

What can I say? It's a Leica!

And the first shot I took... WOW!

You know I really love the Nikkor-O 2.0/35 and it got 5 out of 5 points for optical performance on my website. Now I have a problem, because I think that the Elmarit should get more, so something like 5.5 out of 5, but of course, I will have to test that a little more.

What can I say? It's a Leica!

Well, it seems that the "Leica fever" got me. Oh no!!! This is going to be expensive!!! Laughing

Not stop, I won't. Can't do this to my family... Wink

P.S.: Photos later!

This is what the lens looks like at my Canon EF-M.
...
(Sorry, it's badly cut out...)

And these are two first snaps from today. ISO400, 1/60, f2.8 or half a stop down (I can't remember exactly)!
...

These shots are complete unprocessed (just "de-rawed" and slightly re-sharpened after resizing down.) This is what the photos look like straight from the cam!

Isn't that impressive?

Looks really good Carsten! I would be excited also to have these as my first shots from this lens. How long will it live on your camera? Wink

He may as well get out his acetylene torch and weld it to the camera's
mount flange. Laughing

Congrats, Carsten! Superb pics with a superb lens!

That is why I like Leica for portraits, because the slight cool cast makes the skin look more realistic (many lenses make people's face look like ham).
Congrats on your purchase!
I know you'll be busy playing with it, but it would be nice to see a portrait of your child with the Kaleinar also, I'm curious.

Carsten what an adorable little guy. And how well his portrait looks from that superb Leica. It certainly seems to live up to your expectations. Great and congratulations
