Hi Folks,

What do you think of this product?

Rather expensive, but I wonder if it is any better than a cheapo version?

The reason why I have never used one of those gadgets is that you pay for seeing things bigger by not seeing the whole image anymore.
With a 100% viewfinder you only see about 75% of the image that is recorded.

Seems to be a good product for cropped sensor

I bought one that gives me 1.35x magnification for my Canon EOS XS (1000D) a couple years ago or so, and it's never come off the camera since. Mine doesn't cut off any of the image, either. I find that, in order to see the entire image, I have to push the eyepiece up to my eye a bit farther, but that's it. Plus, the eyepiece rotates for dioptric correction, the way you would adjust the variable eyepiece in a set of binoculars. The zoom one wasn't around when I bought mine, so I can't comment on it. But they all work on the same basic principle.

The field of view is so squintingly small with my XS -- even with the magnifying eyepiece -- I can't even imagine anymore doing without one of these things.

Alternative product is the Tenpa 1.22x or 1.36x 6th generation magnifier

I have one of those but haven't used it recently - have to dig it out Smile
It just magnifies a bit and focusing may be a little bit easier - but don't expect miracles.
My eye sight is good so i see equally better with it and without it.

On the downside image gets a little bit darker and you do not see the borders as they are captured by the camera.

That was the name I was trying to think of. Tenpa. I have a 1.36x. And honestly I don't notice this alleged cropping that others seem so concerned about. It has helped some with my trying to use MF lenses on my crop-bodied camera -- and keep in mind that the entire point of these magnifiers is to increase the size of the image one sees from the dinky fields of view one gets with a crop body -- but I've run into enough other shortfalls with trying to use MF lenses, especially fast ones, that I have largely given up, except in certain controlled circumstances. Now that I have a NEX though, these issues are moot. And my crop-body Canon sits on the shelf, gathering dust, as the NEX gets all the attention now. Wink

How about turning your old camera phone into a live viewfinder?

I have a kps one and it is very good, I used it the 40D and now on the 5DII
cheaper ones introduce distortion and blurred borders
1.35x is a low factor and almost nothing is cut
it is useful for manual focusing lens wider than 50mm
