I just bought a Vivitar adapter. It's either T4 or TX. I'm hoping it is T4. But I bought it just the same. The writing on the adapter is "PX" which I believe stands for "Pentax". The adapter is threaded and I'm assuming it is m42. I won't know T4 or TX for certain until the adapter arrives. Here is the auction:

[seller also tossed in a lens and a couple of filters, along with the adapter]
It's nice to obtain this adapter even if it's TX. These things are not growing on trees! |

There's some homework to study while you wait for the lens to arrive. They are different, just different enough to cause a problem if you mount T4 adapter to a TX lens. But I have adjusted mine so all three mounts will now fit the two lenses I've got. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....

Understood. Thanks.
Yes, I do have a feel for the T4/TX compatibility issues, forward and backward . . as it were.
I've never modified any of my adapters (I only have two or three), but I assumed it might be possible to achieve interoperation that way. Thing is I am reluctant, I'm disinclined, to mess with a good TX adapter, if that's what this ends up being. Doing so just does not feel like the right thing to do (for me, I mean).
The other day I brought in a very nice Vivitar lens that somebody had "monkeyed" with. The lens is fully functional and will work fine on any digital camera. The glass is great. But the mount is ruined in a non-reversible way to where it's no longer original. That lens makes me uncomfortable. I have a strong urge to go out and buy the parts I would need to reverse the damage done, the changes made, to the mount.
So I'm prepared to live with whatever I've bought . . . as is. I'm still hoping for T4, though. |

I would bet this is a T4. If memory serves, TX mounts came in sometime in the mid 1970s and this lens is definitely earlier than that. It looks like a late 1960s lens to me. _________________

I recently bought another TX adapter, and that fitted straight into the T4 Soligor lens as though it was made for it. The modification is done to the lens not the adapter. It's just one thickness of paper under the catch on the lens body to compensate for the slightly smaller diameter of the lens at the point where the catch is situated. Easy and reversible. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....

This had not occurred to me when I responded to you earlier so I'm making a separate post. Regarding your mention of this lens and adapter being from late 1960's:
I have just a very slightly different take on the age. We all are interested in MF lens provenance so I want to show my reasons, too. I would put this lens and adapter combination at 1970 or newer. Here is why:
The lens itself carries "37" as the first two digits in its serial number. This is widely accepted as being indicative of Tokina. But that numbering system did not come into being until circa 1970. Now of course it might have been in the very late 1960's, I suppose. But this reference is putting the year, at least nominally, at 1970:
http://www.cameraquest.com/VivLensManuf.htm
Now the full serial number is: 3758220
as provided in the title of the auction. According to that reference, the third digit gives the year, which I'm guessing is during the 1970's and therefore is 1975.
And at this point my analysis falls apart as the fourth and fifth digits exceed the supposed maximum of 52!! Anyone claiming this stuff is easy is full of prunes!!
But regardless, bottom line, if this lens and adapter really are from 1975 then I am at some risk of it being TX. |

Buying lenses on eBay is a "box of chocolates" thing, isn't it! You never really know what you're going to get; and there are even instances when you don't get anything at all!
The lens came in today. Lens and adapter are like brand new, absolutely beautiful!
Amazing stuff. Don't worry, I get burned often. So this kind of outcome is really refreshing.
And to top it off, I think the adapter is T4!!!!
I should go out and buy a lottery ticket. This is my lucky day!! |
