The Industar-22 was the Soviet clone of what was perhaps my favourite Zeiss Tessar incarnation, the Tessar 3.5/50
(first born in the Contax rangefinder system, later ported over to M42 reflex cameras by Jena Zeiss in the post-war).
It is just a simple test as the lens arrived. Overall, I am pleasantly surprised (but the 3.5/50 Tessar is better):

I'm not expert of Soviet glasses, but I think that since the 3.5/50 Tessar by Zeiss was ported from Contax rangefinder over to reflex system
(with registration adjustment of course), I would expect that also the Russian clones had followed the same path.
From the outside the two lenses are different (the barrel of the 22 is curiously a copy of the Elmar for Leica), but if you pay attention
you can see that the real difference is only the tube, that in the rangefinder (version 22) needs to obviously be longer than in the reflex version (wich is a very flat pancake lens).
As for the optical block, the dimensions seem compatible enough to attempt guessing that one is the reflex continuation of the other. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Very nice pictures. I like the first one a lot. It shows good separation.
I have the industar 22 in zenit reflex m39. It always impressed me as looking very similar to the 3.5/50 Tessar:

Yes, it's a good copy, I got it very cheaply from an Italian ebayer. It even came with original caps, my guess is that it's been used seldomly. _________________ Orio, Administrator

For sure, good copy on a good cam and handed by a good photographer too.
I have the same lens than above in M42 mount and it gives good results.
OOps, sorry, the lens I have is an Industar-50 3.5/50 from 1968. _________________ Olivier - Moderator

Did you have to shim it in order to make it fit to the M9 rangefinder?
I ask because I needed to shim my Jupiters to make it fit to my M8. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

My collapsible copies are all stunning, on these lenses first number shows year. So if you see 53xx on lens that means made in 1955 not in 1953. _________________ -------------------------------

I have read on a site, that the lenses that begin with 53 are actually 1953, while the others are like you say.
I will look if I can find that site. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Yes, sovietcams, this is the link to the page I read:
http://sovietcams.com/index.php?804100465
If you look at PT5850 description, it shows my version of the lens, and it says:
Quote: |
2nd generation of the collapsible Industar-22 lens, released by KMZ in 1953. Identical to PT5765 (see information above), but with serial number on the faceplate already.
7-digits serial number with date prefix. Unidentified quantity released in 1953 only (?). |
