How do you focus?

First you have to enable "Fire shutter without lens" in the menu and make sure focus assist and the MF button is active.

Without a viewfinder you have to focus using the LCD screen which neatly flips up so you can hold the camera at waist level. Attila's hood helps here, because in bright light it's difficult to see the screen.

When you focus manually with an AF lens, the focus-assist cuts in automatically (if you set that option) but with a MF lens you have to press a button. This zooms in to the subject to see it clearly. There are two levels of zoom on my NEX, maybe the 5N too. This is very helpful. There is also focus-peaking, which highlights in bright yellow or white all the parts of the image which are in focus. It looks very impressive but I find it's not completely accurate unless you use focus-assist as well.

I would say put your worries aside - manual focussing with the NEX is a delight. Smile

Perfectly : focus assist magnifier first step (7x) + peaking focus + foldable screen hood with maximum screen luminosity ,if bright sun .

focus peaking for fast focusing:

note: one can choose "peaking color" red, yellow or white and 3 sensitivities. ( high sensitivity may show more to be in focus than really is )

enlarged view ( if with focus peaking best at "low" sensitivity ) for precise focusing:

One can select the area to view enlarged on the touchscreen, when using a manual lens. Pressing a hard button will double enlargement, half pressing the release button snaps view back to full frame.
Choosing a point on the touchscreen a native Sony AF lens focuses there, enlarged view is engaged when manually turning it's focus ring. Pressing that hard button further enlarges.
I mostly use the EVF and manual lenses and this hard button to engage enlarged view
