Once a year I attempt to remember how to take shots of fireworks, this year with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 35-70/3.4. Yep, I was too close Laughing

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the positive comments Smile I was very cramped and even tripped up a few people with my tripod ( Laughing ) but fireworks are always a good challenge Smile

Graham, I see from the the EXIF that #4 was a 3 second exposure. Can you remember the aperture setting?
Timing is the key to this - do you fire the shutter when you hear the whoosh or when you hear the bang? Smile

Peter, I was shooting at f/5.6 in shutter priority mode (although manual is the same anyway) and I release the shutter at the moment where I think the rocket(s) is going to explode. That gives a few seconds of explosion to capture, which hopefully produces a nice image without too sharper edges, or weird streaky lines.

You can actually shoot fireworks handheld at high ISO but in my opinion the results aren't as pretty (the longer shutter speed gives a smoother result, much like when shooting the sea at night with a long exposure).

Great technique too!

You are a brave man using a tripod in a crowded area. I will be worried in case of offending someone, especially if there is a risk of tripping someone over!
