A very complete Exif editor seems to be PhotoME www.photome.de.

I tried it under Wine emulation (no, I was not drunk, just using Linux Wink) and I kinda liked it.

Takes a lifetime to save a file... is that normal?

No, not if you tried ExifToolGUI...

That's what I did. It takes a couple of minutes to save one CR2

Looks interesting, I hope to be able to install it.

Ebay seller "happy page hk" now sells their adapters with exif info encoded in chip. You have to order an adapter for each lens length which can get expensive. I have ordered one for the zuiko 21. It seems worth it to try them out.

Yes, I know. I am going to order two myself, for my most used lenses, the Distagon 1.4/35 and Planar 2/135. Of course I can not buy a custom adapter for all my lenses.

Actually, further improvement would be possible. GIven the amount of light, and the shooting time, a decent software should be able to calculate the approximate aperture.
It would be nice to see such software given with these custom adapters.
The software would then write a mergeable EXIF file to quickly update the exifs in the files.
This is not my invention, the Contax G2, which is now about 10 years old, uses this method with its data back to write the approx. aperture on the film edges.

That's an excellent idea. I think the problem would be to analyse the "brightness" of the digital picture. If you have a solution for this, the needed algorithm to calculate the f-stop doesn't seem to be hard to find... even empirically with several example shots.

Perhaps one could compare how much brighter a picture is than a neutral grey card. Question
But then a very bright subject will produce a very bright picture f4, whereas a dark subject will produce a dark picture at f4 and the same exposure time.
So the software would need to be intelligent and "know" the subject... Sad

Thats very neat; are there any similar adapters for Nikon mount?

The CR2 knows it, Carsten. It will even know if you applied exposure corrections.
Of course, it is necessary that you used A(perture) or P(rogram) modes. It will not -obviously- be possible to know if you used M(anual) mode.

I guess it is in CR2-files, because the lens tells the cam about aperture, exp. corr. etc...

An update. The LensID data for CPU-enabled, non-Nikkor, Nikon-compatible lenses is maintained by Robert Rottmerhusen; this is the source of the data used by exiftool. The data for my Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 was missing.

Code:
$ exiftool -LensID cv40.jpg
Lens ID     : Unknown (00 54 48 48 18 18 00 00)

Then, I contacted someone who owns the other Voigtländer SLII lens (the Nokton 58mm f/1.4) and got him to send me a JPEG file made in his D300 with that lens.

Next, I sent the LensID data for the Ultron and the Nokton to Robert, who updated his database

Then, exiftool updated, including the new database. So now, with version 7.19 which I just downloaded today:

Code:
Chris@brigindona ~/exif
$ exiftool -LensID cv40.jpg
Lens ID    : Voigtlander Ultron SL2 40mm F/2 SL II Aspheric
al

Chris@brigindona ~/exif
$ exiftool -LensID cv58-incamera.jpg
Lens ID    : Voigtlander Nokton SL2 58mm F/1.4 SL II

I just ran the updater and now it knows about the Ultron and Nokton, as well. So it must use the same lens database.

Re-reading this:

hmmm... a program that uses perl command lines and takes 2 pages to explain me how to install and run a exe file? Not for me. I was off reading after the 20th line of the intro document. It may be the best program for sure but I don't want something so painful and so self-concerned to just edit a couple text lines.

I can imagine someone saying

hmmm... a camera that makes me understand aperture and shutter speeds, and takes 2 pages to explain me how to take the first photo? Not for me. I was off reading after the 20th line of the intro document. It may be the best camera for sure but I don't want something so painful and so self-concerned to just take a photo! My cellphone can do that with one button.

There is a GUI for EXIFTOOLS and it works smoothly.
