I decided to try and make one of these for myself. What do you think?
Plastic bowl, metal guttering for flash inlet, aluminum duct tape, angle iron, and too much time LOL

Self Portrait with "new" beauty dish

Canon Rebel XTI, Nikon SB-25 flash, Zeiss Jena 50/2.8, & cheap ebay triggers

The idea isn't bad, but I hope you didn't run the flash at max power in the test because this seems more like the results I have with a snooted 300ws monotorch than the ones you get from a real beauty dish (which is pretty wider btw).

Jokes apart, DIY is so much fun and I also tried to make a beauty dish out of a disposable aluminium bowl, but then you have to fight with the lack of power of small flashes.

Being in the US get an Alienbee and a real beauty, it's not that much money and you'll get the real desidered effect.

I am in the process of making a large one for my JTL strobe. I am using a very large mixing bowl from a restaurant supply store. Once finished I will post those results.
I would love to get the one from AB but right now it can not be justified Crying or Very sad

On the shots above I only had the flash set to 1/16th power. Even at lower outputs I like the results I have been getting. Most recently I used this as a fill light for our Christmas card.

Shad, with those beautiful children you don't need beauty dish, just take them out in the garden and everything you would need, at the very most, is a white cardboard as reflector. Smile

Orio,
Thanks! I plan on doing more portraits of them as the weather is getting nicer here. Well, as long as they cooperate Laughing They don't like being photographed Confused
