Seller doesn't know.
But according to the guy from pentaxslr, it's normally a 100mm f2.
Will see.

I agree with woodrim.

Mine has no inscription at all and has the same design as those shown here with cyclop inscription.

i got both of them. the 77,77 cyclop that was so lucky because the seller wrote Zyklop as a tittle Very Happy , so there was not so much bidder for this lens

Hello everyone !

Been reading this forum for a while now, got really addicted to m42 glass, but it's actually the first time I post something !

I bought a Cyclop, but there seems to be something wrong with my copy, it looks really soft and with some nasty glow ! I've already tried to disassamble and look for reversed or loose elements but it looks ok ! Can't seem to find anything suspicious !

Has anyone else had this problem ? I appreciate any help !

Did you compared your elements position and number with Cyclop / Helios design scheme? There might be element missing. Can you post your best photo made with it?

There could be something wrong, but maybe not. If you are using it in bright light it can get a bad glow with whites blown out. It is very difficult to focus correctly and takes practice, so that could be the soft problem. However, if something is wrong, could also be haze or fungus.

No it's not flare, it just doesn't focus, and the Cyclop looks brand new, I don't think it was ever used ! I'm pretty used to the narrow DOF, because I own an Helios 40. I will probably sell it, maybe someone can figure it out !

Mine was soft and very prone to flare.
http://forum.mflenses.com/cyclop-h3-t1-1-5-85mm-no-coating-t47883,highlight,%2Bcyclop.html
http://forum.mflenses.com/cyclop-85mm-1-5-t47953,highlight,%2Bcyclop.html

A back glass was a little loose, not very plane. After repositioning and screwing it tight, results were better.
Then I compared results with Helios-40 and other fast lenses :
http://forum.mflenses.com/helios-40-and-cyclop-85mm-1-5-nikkor-s-c-50mm-1-4-and-1-2-t49149,highlight,%2Bcyclop.html

http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic,p,1237498.html#1237498

How are your results compared to these ?
Softer than my first samples ?

If you shoot a sheet full of text, strictly parallell to it, is the focus plane equal on the whole sheet ?
What is your camera ?
Could you post some of your pictures ?

PostPosted: Sat Jun 23, 2012 8:26 am    Post subject: How to clean the front element of Cyclop 85mm 1.5 Reply with quote

Hello everybody....

I just got my cyclop 85mm 1.5

Because the rear element was loose somehow, it gives a clicking sound (when I press it gently) and I am sure that the rear element was not sitting properly.
I open the rear part and seems the rear element ring needs to be tighten, because it's already open I decided to clean it too.
Now the lens is clean but only the rear part.

I wonder how to clean the front element ?
Do I have to open the ring in front which has the CYCLOP and the 85/1.5 written on it ?

I would appreciate if someone could help and share about this.

Meanwhile here are samples taken after the lens has been cleaned.

Before cleaning.

Yes, you have to unscrew the front ring.
Promising pictures but look quite blue. Did you shoot them with the 550D or the Nex ?

Hi everyone, it's my first post so please be gentle...

Can anyone give a good reason why you would choose the cyclop 85mm lens instead of getting the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 which is would give arguably better results anyway (and it has a diaphragm too). I've been watching the prices of these lenses on the 'bay for quite some time and for what they seem to go for, I would much rather (and actually did) get the Samyang for just a little more. Is there any other advantage of the Cyclop over the Samyang which I am missing?

A valid question. I'll give you few reasons though decision isn't easy and is very subjective:

1. Samyang is still 2-3 times more expensive though dirt cheap compared to Leica or Zeiss.
2. Samyang prices will go down, Cyclop's will rise (limited edition, no more being produced). Moderately.
3. Swirly bokeh. Seen in it's best using full frame camera or SHIFT adapter for smaller sensor cameras. Not all photographers understand the rules of making one (swirly bokeh) to be honest.
4. It can be disassembled and modified easily. Custom aperture for instance.
5. I assume most Samyangs will work after 10 years. But after 20? Well, there is no reason Cyclops wouldn't be working after 200 years Smile.

Hello Ajax and welcome ! Very Happy

I have both lenses, on Canon.
I would say that these 2 lenses have different "spirit".

Samyang 1.4/85mm is a modern manual focusing lens and benefits of modern lenses treatment.
It lacks of electronic contacts, but I glued an AF confirm chip without any problem.
Its image quality is very good, even wide open and it is a very good portrait lens.
http://forum.mflenses.com/samyang-85-1-4-t22739,highlight,%2Bsamyang+%2B1+%2B4+%2B85.html

Cyclop 1.5/85mm has no diaph as you mentioned.
It is for more "artist" photographies with special bokeh and a kind of aura around subjects.
It's not an easy lens as you have to deal with overexposure a lot.

If you want a Cyclop like very good portrait old lens with diaphragm, have a look at the Helios-40 1.5/85mm, or the Jupiter 2/85mm.

If I were you, I would negin by buying the Samyang. Else you should be disappointed if you don't have MF lenses' experience.

Cheers Smile

Fair enough and thankyou for the responses. I did actually buy a Rokinon (same as the Samyang) and put a Canon AF chip on it. I works very well and for the shallow depth of field/low light abilities I love it.
