I can't express the limits of my excitement! I received this lens from
a benefactor on this forum Shocked who has a heart of gold. This came
as a total shock to me, and I'm blown away by the generosity.

I've taken a few test shots from around my home area, using
only Kodachrome 200. I had vowed previously to not use the lens
until I could return to the rain forests, but I couldn't resist. Laughing
K200 is a good film, but the negatives are somewhat difficult
to scan (for me).

The negatives themselves are fantastic under a 10x loupe', with the edges
being clean, and the contrast purely impressive. I am poor at determining
color value from the negatives, but once scanned, I feel that the CV90
truly renders "real" colors I as I see them with the eyes.

I've ordered a brick of Provia, of course. Wink

Here are the characteristics that I see:

1. Sharp corner to corner, as evidenced by the scans.
2. Color rendition neither warm nor cool; rather the colors are
truly neutral, which is what I love - no need for post-processing colors.
3. Also, I must say that the K200 is a very good film for color, along
with 160 speed Kodacolor or Fuji film.
4. NO chromatic aberrations - none!
5. NO color fringing - none!
6. Mechanical build is a 9.5 out of 10.
7. Extremely smooth focus and aperture rings.
8. Bokeh about 7 out of 10, but I don't think this lens is built solely for bokeh. Wink
9. Contrast is perfect.

Here are images straight from camera and scanner:

Last of the Leaves
Look at the corners. Very Happy f:3.5

Playhouses - Bainbridge Island
Corner-to-corner sharp. Shocked Rendition of pastel colors in background leaves is superb and true-to-life. Edges are clean. f:8

Ivy
f:3.5

Ivy Full Crop
f:3.5

CA and Fringing Test - Dark Woods and Very Bright Sky
Not the greatest image, but a good test. f:4.5

Contrast Test - Excellent
Poor scan, but contrast is excellent. f:5.6

Shadows and Highlights Test
Good resolvance. Excellent sharpness.
f:5.6

Now, talk about luxury gift !! Shocked
Congratulations to both: to you for receiving a champion lens, really unparalleled in its category, and to the donor for the shocking generosity - it does not happen everyday to make a gift of a 500+ Euros lens!

CONGRATULATIONS Larry!

Fantastic colors, contrast + sharpness and even the pastel colors of that soft fog are wonderfully reproduced!

Apo-Lanthars are simply lenses which always puts me in a state of awe!

BUT, it needs a great photographer behind and YOU never cease to amaze me too!

Right on both counts, Orio. I have a feeling this lens will NOT be
coming off the camera very much.

It's going to take me a while to reduce the shock of receiving this. Shocked

I will try to use this to the best of my ability in my beloved rain forests,
but I'm also cognizant of the abilties of this lens for very close focusing,
and for portraiture.

Thank you Klaus. I too, am really impressed with the color rendition, which
is a combination of a good film and an "instant classic" lens. Very Happy

In actuality, I only recently researched the apochromatic lenses, and I
am impressed by the ingenuity of the physicists and engineers who
created the configurations that provide such clarity to the total lens. Shocked

Of course, as mentioned in the material I read, there is
also a very tight tolerance regarding utilizing Apo lens surfaces and
glass bodies with the curved surfaces and integral relationships with
each other, into the overall schema of the lens. It's really fascinating,
and even the concept is fascinating.

This lens is a treasure to me.

It's awesome. I'm speechless.

Well, if the apo concept is fascinating, what about "Superachromats" Max Herzberger at Zeiss developed a few
years ago and was put into reality for three lenses of the Zeiss Hasselblad series of lenses?
Not only three wavelengths are perfectly corrected but four (even the IR index is obsolete on these lenses)!
An interesting read about ultra precise workmanship:

Laurence

It is wonderful to see such an incredible lens in such talented hands. Your first samples are already a fitting tribute to an extraordinary lens. Those three CV lenses are truly a testament to the design and manufacture of extremely complex pieces of engineering. Whoever made the gift to you knew what he was doing for all of us

Congratulations!!!

Yes the 90/3.5 is fabulous, and it's done a great job of supressing my need/greed for an 85mm "portrait" lens for my Pentax K-7. Between this, the 125/2.5 and my FA 31mm f1.8 Limited, my K-mount prime lens lineup feels really complete.

And boy, what a joy the little lens is to handle, no??

Amazing results! Congratulations!
Seems you had an early Christmas this year. Very Happy

What a wonderful and generous thing to do. Wow!

For the longest time I was wondering if I should get this lens in Leica screw mount or the 75mm Color-Heliar, but got the 75 instead, now I have this lens in both M42 and Leica screw. The 90mm in Leica screw is not outrageously costly but it might work better with the SLR and I am still thinking about the 21mm... life is tough isn't it?

PostPosted: Sat Dec 12, 2009 12:01 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Not really, since the 75mm unfortunately has plenty of CA, since it is no Apo design (I was eying that one too,
but decided against that Heliar after some tests). The Apo Lanthar is a very different class and I'm happy to
have them! I also had the LTM version which was also impressive, yet a bit bulky on a RF camera.

Congratulations. Lanthars are just amazing. It's a pity Cosina stopped development of these SLR lenses...

Klaus,

That's what I was thinking too: the Leica screw mount is just a touch too bulky for a CRF camera as it's meant to be small and mobile: that's why I chose to have the smallest 35mm and 50mm to go with it rather than the big fast ones, and 75mm would be a handier lens to use compared to the bigger 90.

EXTREMELY interesting Klaus. I had no idea that there was a SUPERachromatic group of lenses, and further that they are already
in use as "high-end" lenses for printing and scientific imaging. Shocked

You are very kind, Patrick. Yes the three lenses would be something fantastic, wouldn't they?

Yeah, this lens IS a joy to handle! Compact, smooth as silk, and a nice
balance with the Revueflex 3003. I envy you both your 125/2.5 Shocked and the FA 30mm Limited. Wow!

Yes! Life is tough! I think you should make life easier by acquiring the 90 into your kit, then things will settle down.....maybe. Smile

I wonder why they stopped production? Perhaps a business move to make
the lenses more "rare"? Hard to tell what their motive is.
