zzi did a search, and the Mutar I thread I found is in the MFL club, which I do not have access to.
yesterday, I was wondering if I should get a Jena Zebra 180 2.8, but prices on ebay was high so i didn't. The seller also did not answer my question so even if the price was right, I wouldn;t have bid.
Anyways, I was thinking ... the Contax CZ 85mm 1.4 which I already have, with a Mutar I.
How do you think that would work out?
I know using any TCs will degrade the image, and the best is to stop down a little.
I've had really usable photos from a Canon 70-200 2.8 and a Kenko Pro DG 2x TC that I'm no longer biased against TCs in general.
Thanks again for all your expert advise. |

Andy (F16Sunshine) have it , this is one of the best TC on market. I think price is same or more than a 180mm Jena lens. No idea about quality with 85mm , but I expect same or better quality than Sonnar (more contrast on images) _________________ -------------------------------

Wow! Attila!
I think you're the resident encyclopedia on manual focus lenses!
Thanks so much for the info.
I was going through my local forum ... the last Pentacon 180mm DDR Jena sold for almost $800 (my currency) so that works out to nearly US$530 for that lens!!!
I think I'll try and see if the advertised Mutar going for around US$130 (before bargaining) is still available.
Thank you once again Attila! |

Check out www.keh.com - there are plenty of Mutar I's there for $55-62, and Mutar II's for $90-120. _________________ List of lenses |

My understanding though is that you cannot use the Mutar II with the 85mm. The elements in the Mutar I are farther back in the adapter than the Mutar II and Mutar III. If I am mistaken, please correct me, as I have thought of doing the exact same thing with my Planar. _________________ Dave |

Yes, Mutar II is not possible in combination with the Planar 1.4/85.
Here's a datasheet from Zeiss, comparing the compatiblity of Mutar I & II:
http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIntern/MutarI-II_2x_d/$File/MutarI-II_2x_d.pdf
Found only the german sheet, but:
1 means recommended
2 combination possible but with optical restriction
3 not possible (mechanically)
* small vignetting in near and macro mode
** not recommended because of vignetting
Hope this helps _________________

Hmm ...3 days and no reply from KEH.com yet.
Anyone knows how long it takes for KEH to respond to an email enquiry?
At any rate, I've sent them my e-mail again. Hope they receive it. |

Has anybody got some more information about the Mutar I 2x telecoverter?... I've got the Planar 85/1.4 too and I was asking myself if it is worth it to pay about 120$ for it... does anybody knows how it performs or got any samples?
Thanks! |

I have this combo and I am not impressed by the quality, I don't use it so it is too much for the price I paid it

Ooops, I think you are right... maybe for about the same price is better to go for the Sonnar 135/2.8 in terms of sharpness. I will use it on a full frame, but I suppose the performance will be the same... Time to think about it. |
