Is good or bad? I hope don't be the worst model Helios 44-2.

I have just acquired one like the Helios-44 zebra in M42. It is the same as another M39 stated some pages before, only the mount differs.
It reads HELIOS-44 2/58 N1013561, has an MMZ Logo. I have tried it against my other Helios 44-2 and found it to be considerably softer at all apertures. _________________ http://photographiagr.wordpress.com/

Helios 44 pre-set models (44, 44-2, 44-3)
Helios-44
- resolution: 35/14 or 36/17
- 8-13 aperture blades, pre-set aperture
- M39 SLR, sometimes appears as M42 model (possibly early version of 44-2 with old model ring)
- there is a KMZ prototype marked "Helios 44-1", but production models are always marked only as "44"
- serial number almost never corresponds to year of manufacture, nearly always begins by "N" or "N°"
- MMZ lenses with serial number beginning by "N40xxx", "N50xxx" or "N60xxx" are likely made in 1964, 1965 and 1966 (first number of sn very likely means year of 196x decade)
KMZ
silver, Π, "5,8cm", sn "N°000xxx", 13-blades, f/22 - rare
silver, Π, "5,8cm", sn "N°00xxx", 13-blades, f/16 - rare
silver, "2/58", sn "N°0xxx" or "N°00xxx", 13 blades
silver, "2/58", sn "N°0xxx", 8-blades
black + white lettering, "2/58", sn "N0xxx", 8 blades
black + white lettering, M42, "2/58", sn "N0xxx", 8 blades
MMZ
silver, "2/58", sn "N°40xxx", 8 blades
silver, "2/58", sn "N50xxx" or "N60xxx"
zebra, "2/58", sn "N°xxx" (e.g. 1970) |
I've seen N°000xxx, 13 blades, but with f/16 only. So not all N°000xxx are f/22.
Maybe I can also add a detail. It has a "silver" nose ring like the 3rd lens. I own a N°0xxx and it has a black nose ring like the 2nd lens.

Was mounted on a Zenit-E, serial 670XXXXX, KMZ logo engraved .
I have no paperworks, but have no reason to believe anything else that this is an original camera/lens combination.

I've just purchased a Helios 44 M39 with red П, f22 type. I was finding it for several months with frustrations. Finally I found one with $225. Too expensive for a Helios 44, I guess but it's so rare now. I have 44-2, 44-3, 44M-4, 44M-7 and actually I like them all. 44M-7 seems to have the best resolution as many people mentioned but I'm not sure if the bokeh is different from 44-2.
I'm too excited to wait for this Helios, but can't find any sample shots taken with this version. There was a post about the f16 version, which is very nice, and someone complained that the CA is bad, but there is no reference for this f22.
I'll definitely compare them when I get this lens.
Here is the photos provided by the seller

An excellent thread on Helios lenses.
I picked this really scruffy copy of a Helios 44-2 up today at a car boot sale. It was not attached to any camera, although the seller did have a Zenit B with a Helios 44-2 attached to it (1971 if my memory serves me correct).
This one though was in very grubby condition. I haven't been in long, but after a quick clean I thought I would post a couple of pictures of this Helios 44-2. So is it pre 1970/71

Hi
This lens has twin aperture rings - the other is right in front from the one You are talking about. It has aperture values written on it. You should set the desired aperture value with the front ring, focus with the second one opened and close it only before the shot. The front ring limits how much aperture is closed with the second ring. |

Hi, i recently bought a Helios 44, m39 mount with 13 blades, sn 0031303 from a flea market, in a not so good condition, but at a really reasonable price.
I do not have an adapter, but i was able to change the lens mount with one from a helios 44-2 that i had around, until i get the adapter. I also had to clean and lube it, clean the glass from a lot of dirt and dust, but it is all done now.
I noticed that it had that really cool looking blue/purple coating, but also that thru the viewfinder everything is yellow-ish. Is that normal? The wather is bad here unfortunately, but when it improves, i will add some samples. |

Mine appears to predate the 1a or it's just a lower serial number.
The one I posted about earlier with the bad flare, was a 1b. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...

I think all 000 and lower are from the same year of production (but yes, yours is earlier in the year).
Btw, I wonder if Helios 44 for start and for zenit follow the same production numbering... (a H44 for start with 000 is from the same year than H44 000 for zenit?) . _________________ Pierre

Finaly solved the mystery around my Silver helios 44
The mystery was : The serial number doesn't fit to this lens. If this is KMZ, this lens should have been built in 1950, which is not possible. But it is not MMZ, because it's not MMZ logo, and MMZ never made H-44 with Red P and focal in cm.
So, after discussion with someone working for KMZ, it appears that this lens is kind of rare "hybride" from KMZ and MMZ. In 1965, MMZ started the production of H-44 in order to support KMZ. So, KMZ sent to MMZ some machines, documations and few not finished lens in order to start from something, and get used to machines. My H-44 is certainly one of those lens that were sent from KMZ to MMZ. The lens was started in KMZ, they engraved the name ring, but not the serial number, because the lens was not finished. MMZ finished it and engraved their serial number "a la MMZ". This information looks to be confirmed by the fact that the SN of my lens is the lower he saw from MMZ Helios-44.
Undirectly, it also show that in 1965 (or 1964), KMZ was still doing Helios-44 with SN 00xxxxx , because the red P and cm disappeared during the 00 production (there are some 00 with red P, other 00 (latest) without red P... and no 0xxxx exist with red P). _________________ Pierre
