Compact and light weight 85mm?

What are the choices?

I am only aware of Zuiko 85/2, which is supposed to be excellent. But are there many difference versions of it like the 50/1.4?

Any other compact 85mm that are worth considering? Thanks.

i have a jupiter 85mm/2.0 which is pretty small and works nicely on my ep1--it can be had for about $100usd, or less if you are patient. its about the size of the helios 44, but a little heavier. takes great pictures even wide open.

I think you'll find that most 85mm lenses in the f/1.8 to f/2 range will be fairly compact. I've owned a Canon (New) FD 85mm f/1.8 and Nikon 85mm f/2, and both weren't much bigger than a 50mm f/1.4.

Jupiter-9 and Pancolar 80/1.8

Jupiter-9: 70 x 52,5 (width x height)
Pancolar: 65 x 55,5 (width x height)

Jupiter is slightly heavier.

The SMC Pentax-M 85mm 1:2 is relatively small too (it shares the optical design with the Zuiko 85/2).

I don't find the 80mm f/1.8 Pancolar very small though.

Thanks for all your reply. Perhaps I should rephrase the question as "Compact and light 85mm" as I feel that lens heavier than say 300g doesn't balance well on m4/3 (perhaps I should switch to FF ) Smile

The SMC-M looks very interesting, thanks Spotmatic, you seem to have an exquisite collection of 80s!

what about a rangefinder lens--jupiter 9 comes in m39 mount and while i dont have one, it looks smaller and lighter than the m42 version...

O I didn't know Jupiter-9 comes in m39 mount (silly me!) Do you know how much it weight?

PostPosted: Wed Feb 17, 2010 6:04 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

+1 for SMC M 85/2, I had it with the Jupiter 9 and it is a little more small in diameter.

no sorry alex i dont know how much the m39 jupiter weighs as i have the m42 verson; you should take a look on ebay as there may be other 85mms as well.

I tried kitchen scale, but it isn't very accurate.

Jupiter-9 (silver LZOS SLR model) = 350-360g
Jupiter-9 (silver KMZ rangefinder model) = 320-330g
Pancolar 80/1.8 MC = 290-300g

the rangefinder model was probably a bit heavier originally - previous owner removed the part, which transfers focusing distance to camera body

CZ Sonnar 2.8/90mm (for Contax G1/G2)

Better than all other lenses here Wink Wink Wink

Thanks for the weight, no-X. The pancolar is too expensive for me Sad

The Sonnar is surprisingly affordable, on the other hand. I have never use a G lens nor own the adapter. How does the focusing work? I heard that it's "awkward"?

The zuiko is a good choice and Rolf is correct the Contax G90 may be the best of all the lenses metioned.

The problem I see with the Zuiko and any other reflex lens is it will not be so small after you mount the adapter "tube" between it and the camera.
The Cosina Voigtlander 2.5/75 is very smally and L39 so no tube. It's a wonderful sharp optic and one I highly recommend. Fantastic build as well.
If you want to go more exotic check out these lenses that Klaus has for sale.
infinity converted f2.8/70mm Zeiss TEVIDON

How cool is that to be able to use a tevidon on m4/3.

takumar 85 1.9 in really small

Thank you for the recommendation Andy, as always. But why are your recommendation always outside my range? Crying or Very sad

The G 90/2.8 is really attractive, if there is an adapter with focusing ring wrapping around the focusing gear, the G lens price will sky rocket!

The tak 85 is a bit heavier than I am comfortable with though...

The Pentax-M 85mm f/2 lens weighs in at 250 grams and is 63mm in diameter and 46mm long. That is not much more than a 50mm lens.

Sorry Polo Embarassed
I'm just trying to recommend the best option so you can get back to taking photographs and not question your lens choices Wink

Buy cheap buy twice as they say.

I love that lens it's a personal favorite but....... on M4/3 you will have a long tube between it and the camera.
OP wants a compact option. I suppose the Contax G 90 is actually the same optical make up.

I know Andy. Believe me, I am taking a lot of pictures everyday and trying to learn the character of each lens that I have. Wink

85mm will be an occasional fun lens for me, unlike my 28 and 35, so I will try with something cheaper first as you suggested.

I use a Minolta MD Rokkor 85mm F2 all the time. It's a superb lens, and comes in at 276g.
