Member MF-Addicted sent me this lovely Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar just recently, and I wanted to test it on my birthday, so here are the results taken at Marwell Zoo
I had high expectations for this lens, and I have to say that it's absolutely exceeded them! Even at high ISO (all shots were between ISO 640 and ISO 1600) the results are nice and sharp, which says something about the 40D as well. The weather was pretty rotten, cold and wet, but the lens and camera combo still produced some lovely images which I will port onto the oversized gallery at some point, as these resized versions don't do them justice IMO.
The Zeiss lens creates some magical effects and I really fear for my other zooms now which may well end up unused for a while!
All shots were taken wide open (f4) and have had a small amount contrast enhancement and sharpening applied.

I am glad that my old Vario Sonnar 80-200 is in good hands now.
I only let it go for my Vario-Sonnar 100-300 that just arrived.
The weather is really ugly and maybe I will manage some testshots this weekend.

Thanks for all the comments! The lens handles really well and just has that Zeiss "something". I'm about to post some more Planar shots, and that lens has something that just makes me want to use it as well.
I am now quite seriously considering selling on some more gear to pave the way to the 35-70 or 28-85, I've definately got a Zeiss problem now! _________________ Graham - Moderator

Hi Shrek -- go for 35-70 for sure --
the 28-85 - i have tried this before -- it's GREAT but it's a chunky thing a bit)
the 35-70 has also great macro feature -- you'll be happy with this gem..
