Should be a clone of Pentax bayonet RICOH Rikenon. Seems like late plastic version. Seems to be good performer: http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=47230

I had one for a couple of years.
Very sharp, excellent value for its usual low price.
They sell for very little on US ebay and are a great bargain.
I couldn't detect any difference vs the Pentax-M 50/2
I donated it some years ago, along with a lot of other Ricoh gear, to a local high school photography lab. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

It's a very nice lens. I think I paid under $40 for it. I have some sample images taken with it in my review here: http://laurphoto.blogspot.com/2013/03/sears-502-and-5017.html - click the link at the end. |

Thanks for the information everyone. Sounds like a nice lens. Would it be any improvement or variety over a Helios 44-2, Zenitar 1.8/50 or Pentacon 1.8/50 for example? |

So I don't have an excuse to buy another lens?
Anyway, I want to buy lenses that will add to the quality of my collection. For example buying a Jupiter 21M as an improvement over a Pentacon 4/200. I just get attracted to buy inexpensive lenses that might be special.
What do you think? |

Not for buying this one. But I can provide excuses for these other 50mm lenses: Volna 9 50/2.8 (1:2 macro, great bokeh, and star aperture shape), Industar 50-2 50/3.5 (compact and sharp Tessar clone), Voigtlander Nokton 58/1.4 (great build, fast and sharp). Hope this helps |

Thanks I will keep my eyes open, although I already have the Industar 50-2. |

We shall see. It's tempting. I have to learn to how to sell my extra lenses. I would like to buy a lens that would be a definite improvement. Something sharper or with better color. How about Nikon lenses? I see those for not so high prices sometimes. |

In inexpensive leaguage you will can't find better lens what you have already. If you wish to have better one buy a Carl Zeiss Contax T* lens. _________________ -------------------------------

Volna 9 provides very nice color and is truly a unique lens. The Nokton has both nice color and is very sharp.

Here are some images from Sears 50mm f2
The first is a cropped image and the second a 100% crop from the original image.
This is a very good lens and excellent value for money on the used market.

There have been some expressions of doubt over the quality of this lens.
I am led to believe that the Sears 50mm f2 is simply a re-badged XR Rikenon.
Whatever it is - it is an amazing lens.
I have posted above a full frame shot from a Pentax K-10D as well as a 100% crop.
Here is a 200% crop of the same image, and I am starting to see pixels - does this mean that the lens has out-resolved the sensor?

Yes. Its not that hard to do with a lower res sensor like on the K10D.
Particularly when the lens is stopped down.
Though I consider that little Ricoh/Sears pretty darn good.
Some camera sensors are a real test. The 16mp 4/3 sensors seems to be excellent for comparing lens quality.
- my crude measure of a cameras ability to satisfy pixel-peeping curiosity, just fooling around on Excel - this is pixels per square millimeter.
Panasonic DMC-GH3 71,556
Sony Nex 7----------- 66,575
Pentax K5II----------- 44,173
Pentax Kx------------- 33,604
Pentax K10D--------- 27,100
Canon5DIII ----------- 25,810
Pentax K100D-------- 16,260
Canon5D-------------- 14,699 _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Thanks for that feedback luisalegria.
I am amazed by this little lens.
I can't believe that the XR Rikenons and these lenses sell for so little
Definitely a gem in my book.
