Attila is right about the 4/20 Flektogon, it's the most geometrically corrected of retrofocal wide angles.
But there's simply no match against non-retrofocal wides when it comes to geometry.

For APS-C cameras, the LOMO OKC/OKS lenses for 35mm movie cameras are about as good as you will get without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars. They have resolution of 67 or 72lp/mm and the distortion is extremely well corrected, I have the 1-18-1 2.8/18mm and 1-28-1 2.5/28mm and they are fantastic, sharpness is exceptional and distortion is exceptional too. These were professional movie production lenses and the Western equivalent - the Cooke and Zeiss primes are 4-6000USD used. The Lomos are 150-500USD.

Pentax SMC 3.5/15. Supposed to be the same recipe as the Zeiss one. But can be had a lot cheaper. (practically) no distortion.

can't seem to find it on ebay...can I buy yours? Laughing

Look keh.com as source too, periodically.

while the K mount versions of the 15/3.5 smc pentax sell for under $1000, the M42 version is now
quite pricey. I saw a couple sell near $1800 on ebay recently.

Before spending such an amount of money it might be cheaper to buy a NEX 5N and a Contax G Carl Zeiss Hologon 16/8 instead Very Happy
Hologons are going for 1000-1500€ on Ebay in auction

It has mad good distortion control (close to 0%) and is insanely sharp from what I've heard. (Distagon is "only" about 3.75%)

Or if something longer would be also OK, the Contax G Carl Zeiss Biogon T* 21/2.8 or 28/2.8
Both very good modern lenses with almost no distortion and they are comparable very cheap because the Contax G mount is out (Leica M mount version of the Hologon reaches easily 10000€).
The 28/2.8 can be had for 250€

so I'm definitely going to save up for the pentax 15mm f 3.5... Hopefully my collection will be finish by then. One question though. Are pentax future proof? as in it's easily adaptable on future cameras?

Manual lens with quiet long register distance, will be adoptable on Canon, all mirror less , Olympus 4/3 , so no worry.

the metal bits of the smc k version of the smc pentax 15/3.5 may interfere with canon aps-c bodies whereas the screw mount version may OK. Not sure about all this but they are very different physically on the rear section of the barrel.

I felt like I would be more incline to shoot with my nikkor 24mm f 2.8 instead of a 20mm.

the difference in shooting with a 15mm vs a 20mm is extreme.

I know... I use to have a tokina 11-16. But the difference between 20mm and 24mm is not that much huh? I just tested all my lens today and the difference between 24mm and 35mm is noticeable but not extreme.

I sold my Pentax 15/3.5 not long ago. Check Pentax Forum - they pop up there from time to time. You can also put a wanted ad there.

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/wanted-items/

They also pop up on ebay and I've seen them sell for under $900. There is also a rarer Aspherical version as well as the even rarer Takumar M42 version. I don't think there is significant difference in the way they perform.

So, are there any affordable, good, wide angle lenses with little distortion, for M42 mount?
Or is getting your modern brand \ maker model the best thing for your pocket?

There is also the outstanding smc pentax k 18/3.5 with great resolution and contrast and almost no distortion but its hard to find. It is
a little cheaper than the 15/3.5 though.

This cheap Korean lens is better than just about every lens listed in this thread in all aspects, except... (you've got it)... distortion.

But if you are shooting digital, distortion can be corrected pretty well in software.

Otherwise it is extremely sharp with excellent CA control. Make sure you get the UMC version.

How bad really is the distortion. Is it still useable without lens correction?

How about the 12mm/5.6 Ultra Wide Heliar or 15mm Heliar. It seems from reviews that there is distortion with 12mm but with 15mm I've heard it is really very good. And it is not that expensive either.
