I'm becoming interested in this lens. The prices seem to vary a lot. Given time to search, what do you think is a fair price for a lens in excellent shape? I guess the box and the accessories add to the collector's value. Does the mount affeect the price a lot? On a NEX, the mount doesn't really matter much, except that the adapter lenght differs.

On another note, how good is this lens for landscapes? I guess the Angenieux is very different from a Contax Zeiss 35-70/3.4 which has unbelievable micro-contrast.

Looks very promising indeed. I don't need a Raw file at this time but thank you for the offer!

Hi there

Delighted to find this forum.

Im very new to the Angenieux world of lenses but very keen on purchasing the one in this thread. I have a few manual nikon ais that I use on a Canon 5D mark III and really like the result but this has a totally different render. So IM now thinking of selling them.

I would like to use it as a lens for video and it seem to excel on that - of course given the proper care described by Henri.

I do too like to know where to buy these and what is a good price 2012 - they seem to have drastically gone up since this thread started.

I own the leitax mount adapters for nikon to eos mount so I guess that makes sense for focusing to infinity and beyond and maybe clearing up some of the problems shown in this thread.

If anyone has a video made from this lens I d be happy to see it.

Thanks for sharing all this great info.

If Oliver likes to share a raw file Id be a happy camper

Thanks

I'm not sure whether this mount will work with Canon cams. You should ask David before. The Angenieux lenses with Leica-R mount for example are different from normal Leica mounts and he offers a special mount for these lenses to convert them to Nikon. (see Leitax site Leica R to Nikon)

I bought one with Nikon mount few month ago with box, papers etc in like unused condition for 350 €. I'm pretty sure that this was a real bargain, prices vary between 500 € to > 1000,00 € but then you must think about the plausibility of these prices. The lens is very sharp like a prime lens but it is 30 years old. You will have trouble if you need spare parts because the company doesn't support this lens anymore. The very often named life time warranty covers only faults due to production mistakes (you can forget this after 30 years) but not faults due to normal use.

A company in Paris/France which did the support in the past seems to be no longer in the market.

Rolf,

Thanks for replying, I should have clarified that I was going to get the same mount as you. Nikon ais.

That is a real bargain, is this eBay? I have seen the cheapest rice around 1000 E on eBay but it seems eBay is actually a overpriced community. I found this but it far from a stellar shape and impossible to judge the optics
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Angenieux-2-5-3-3-35-70-1503150-f-Nikon-/261025533988?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc6559024#ht_2567wt_1378

Where would you guys recommend me to look for this lens, ebay only have to copies

Leica R to Eos mount exist, still harder to adapt (sometimes you need to shave the back of the lens) so I'll go with ais.

You are completely right about it's a thirty old lens but my nikons are even older but the guy I bought them from had them in an little
cabinet that's air conditioned (pretty rare I think) so they are working great.

I just know that todays canons zooms are inferior when it comes to video, I had many L seris zooms.

Im doing video with eos cameras and the quality difference is apparent with an older nikon ais prime/zoom compared to modern L series canon lenses.

I'm very impressed and right now it feels like this is the best zoom lens with internal focusing and zoom you can buy for a great price. The Leica R zooms are indeed incredible too and the 35-70 F4 is slightly less expensive but I dont think thats one of the best leica zooms just for in terms of mostly doing video.

Very appreciated for any help

Nikon lenses are a different market and you will have a much better chance to get spare parts. With Angnieux lenses you will run in a lot of trouble if something is wrong. Furthermore many people said that the mechanical part of the A lenses are not in accordance with the optical part (means sub-standard)

Concerning prices. *bay is the wrong source for such and similar lenses. Especially the guys from Czech, Slovakia etc. have price ideas beside good and bad. Maybe they thought that we will have money here without end or the friends from Asia will pay any price. So the offer with your link is a joke.

Try to get this lens private at France.

Subliminal message... Wink

Hi Jonas, welcome ! Very Happy
A good price is still 350€ for this lens.
Mine is a Ai-S mount and it works really fine on my 5D MkII with an AF confirm chip adapter Nikon to EOS.

Actually I see one for 300€ but it is a Minolta MD mount.
I'll have a look on french market.
Jonas, where are you from ?

edit :
I've asked 2 persons :
one is willing to sell a pair of 35-70 and 70-210 at the best offer. I asked which mount are they, are they ok (mechanics and optics) and would he sell the 35-70 alone,
one is selling2 Nikon FM2s with differents lenses and photo equipment, including an Angenieux 35-70. I asked him wether he would sell it alone and for which price.
We'll see...

Olivier, thats amazing news!

I don't mean to be a pain - just didnt know where to get these things. There are no market for these things up here and my Parisan photographer friend (lexander.se) just go with all the modern things so dont know either.

And thanks, im so grateful to learn so much for all you guys.

Im in Sweden, Stockholm. Im so thankful for your help. I am interested in the ais mount like you got. So your adapter works good with your camera?

It would be really happy if I could get that lens.

Any one tried the 70-210? is it as good as the 35-70? if yes, I could be interested in going for both if I get a good deal. I dont know how I can thank you Oliver for you just being so kind and checking for me. Thank you!

Plz keep me updated on this.

Very grateful

Jonas

Jonas, the 70-210mm is a very good zoom lens either.
Some had troubles with the bakelite barrel. Mine is mint and ok.

Here are some shots with the 70-210mm.

Do you want me to make an offer for the pair I saw ?
Owner says it's MD mount but sent me pics of the 70-210 showing Nikon mount...

Here are the pics of the 70-210. I'm wondering wether there is some fungus on the front lens, or is it dust ? Maybe is it on the front filter ?
Clic on pictures to open them in full size.

I received the 35-70 pictures.
Here, I'm wondering wether back lens has fungus.
These lenses sure need a good cleaning but if fungus, will it go easily ?

Jonas, do I make an offer ? for the pair ? What price ?
I would try 300€ for the whole, explaining the fact that photos present traces of fungus.

Hi Olivier, could you pls ask for the serial # ? The mount looks different against the version i have here on my desk (it is Nikon AIS too)

Thanks.

Wink

PostPosted: Fri Aug 24, 2012 9:31 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Hi Rolf,
Owner says it is MD mount but it is Nikon mount.

I look my 35-70 and it has exactly the same mount as this one.
My 35-70 serial # is : 1528011.
I think mine is older than the above one because I have rubber rings instead of bakelite rings above, and white inscriptions angénieux ZOOM 2x35 1:2.5-3.3 are thinner, narrower and higher on mine.

PostPosted: Sat Aug 25, 2012 8:09 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Thank you Olivier. My unit has 14xxxxxxx so it seems to be a little bit older. There are some differences at the left lower part (reference pic # 3 above) Maybe they changed the mount a little bit during lens production time.

Whether the lens above will have fungus or not is difficulty to decide by these images. Best would be to ask the seller but when he said for a Nikon mount it is a Minolta MD mount ..... hmmmm maybe a real expert.

BTW is the seller a woman ? I bought mine from a woman at France with Pascal's assistance and have had the same problem. The 70-210 should be Nikon too but was in fact Leica-R. This mistake was at the end an extra add on of 115 € for a special leitax mount by David.

I asked him the serial numbers and asked about the fungus.
We'll see...

Jonas, no instructions ? Wink

Oliver, Im so sorry. My notifications hasnt been popping up like they usually does, maybe I've disable it somehow. Can i enable the notifications again

Thanks Oliver and Rolf for these stuff.

I am only familiar Canon and Nikon glass and I know nikon adapt well to eos.

but not all do http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/manual_focus_EOS.html

and minolta is certainly one of them

Its not easy to say if its just grease from fingers on the outside of the lens or fungus. Isnt it pretty rare with fungus in europe, its kind of dry? or no?

im very interested but i like to get one with a nikon mount since I know thats easier to deal with in terms of adapting it to dos, or should I contact David?

Im very interested in both lenses. Oliver, did you ask the seller? How would I pay for it - paypal?

For 350 euros IM very interested but if its fungus its gonna be expensive to clean them right? changing mounts are one thing and straight fwd. But dissemble a lens is far out of my capabilities.

But both minolta? or one of each?

Im not worried about smaller scratches or dirt pecks but dont like fungus.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 29, 2012 5:01 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Jonas, check MP.

They are Nikon mounts, not Minolta. I'm 100% sure.
I don't like fungus but I think that if it is fungus, our forum member Stan should be able to open them and clean it.

My question is, why they are not on the market anymore for camera lenses, with such an excellent reputation? Rolling Eyes

Hello Opal.
Because of economic issues and market choices.
In 1986 Essilor acquired 58% of Angenieux and from 1986 to 1991, more than 320 employees were let go.
Then in 1993 Essilor sold Angenieux to Thomson - CSF, later named Thalès. Angenieux abandoned still photography to focus on lenses for Cinema and Television.
Today, they are still making lenses for these applications.

Its too bad that such an excellent lens maker has stopped manufacturing photographic lenses, due to the Japanese competition.

Yes.

Question to Henry, Rolf or anybody else :
Can we mount TV or Cinema lenses on APS-C and FF Dslrs ?
Or on NEX, micro 4/3 hybrids, with VNex or MµFT system ?
