Today I posted on my blog a deep examination of the following shot I made for my blog writing about composition, lightning and shooting issues:

If someone is interested in having a glimpse oh how a still life/food studio shot has been done the link is: http://foodografia.blogspot.com/2009/04/anatomy-of-food-shot.html

Interesting!
Thanks for sharing.

I am of your same opinion about continuous light: I prefer it much better than flash. I had the confirmation Sunday when shooting the models. With proper continuous light, the result is close enough to sunlight to be realistic, with just that added extra sharpness (which does not hurt anyway - better to start with more sharpness and remove if needed, than the other way around).
Can you please tell me what instruments do you use (what brand of continuous lamps, of softbox, of "stativi") ?

Actually I'm using a couple of Interfit Cool Lite super 5, usually with their 60x60 softboxes and the tripods that were included in the set.

Recently I've seen some others, even more powerful, sets from various brands but anyway don't even think to shoot something that moves with continuos light unless you want to spend a lot more for movie lights (HDMI or tungsten).

Cheap fluorescent light is still not enough powerful to allow fast shutter times and aperture over 2.8-4.

I saw some fluorescent banks from Lupo but the minumum power you need for shooting people is 2000w equivalent of tungsten and they become bulky and expensive (from this model http://www.lupo.it/ita/fotografia/illuminatori/superlight.php on, just to be practical).

That Lupo looks quite interesting!
Do you know if softbox exists for it?

There's no need of softboxes for those kind of banks, thay already provide pretty diffused light. I you want to diffuse and soften the light even more you need to use scrims (just like they would be windows).

Ah OK.

Not sure I agree with "added extra sharpness" for continuous light over flash. My feeling is flash usually gives the feeling of extra sharpness/crispness sometimes at the expense of looking unnatural/artificial compared with continuous or natural light being softer and more natural.

Fergus

Flash light is "harder" from start, so you need to diffuse it more otherway the results will be too "crisp/unnatural" which is simply the fact of hard light reflections upon the textures of what you're shooting (skin for example in the case of people).

Sometimes you can seek a similiar effect, but yes, I agree with you.
